Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJAMES (JIM) WILLIAM SNOW
Our hearts are broken as we announce the passing of James (Jim) William Snow, on May 20, 2024, at the Souris District Hospital after a short and unexpected diagnosis of pancreatic cancer.
Jim is survived by his wife, Carol, of 52 years, son, Scott (Wanda), granddaughters, Jordan and Brooke; mother-in-law, Wanda Meadows, sister-in-law, Sherri Black (Doug), brother-in-law, Garry Meadows (Maxine), best buddy, Glenn Crampsey and special canine friends, Remi and Harley. Survived also by his sister, Geraldine Webster (Wayne) – who both have since passed away; brothers, Rick (Lorraine), Rod (Anna), Maurice (Joy), Warren (Darlene) and many very loved nieces and nephews. Predeceased by parents, Doug and Lois, brother, Lloyd, father-in-law, Doug Meadows and infant son, Gregory Grant.
Jim was the second son born to Doug and Lois Snow in Rivers, MB, and was raised with his six siblings on a farm in Birtle, MB. Jim and two of his siblings contracted polio when he was approximately two years old. He overcame his illness, however, lived with post polio syndrome all his life. At the age of 17, he moved to Brandon to begin the next trek of his life. After a short stint in the Canadian Armed Forces Reserve, he met Carol (Meadows) while both working at the Husky House. Carol was a waitress and cook and Jim was a gas jockey! He always joked about being paid to drive her to work as there was no bus service to the North Hill in those days. They married on January 15, 1972.
Jim always hobby farmed having horses, pigs, chickens and raising Simmental cattle with his father-in-law, Doug Meadows. During his spare time, he began his employment, firstly with A&W Restaurants, Fred’s Dry Cleaners, Manco Dairies, grain buyer with Pioneer Elevator, Brandon Transit, Brinks and finally found his dream career with Brandon Correctional Institute (Centre) from 1981 to 2006. Jim was never without work and took great pride in his Class I License, long haul trucking as a pasttime. Jim and Carol worked as a team installing GeoThermal ground source heat which gave them the opportunity to travel around Saskatchewan and Manitoba, meeting and acquiring many new friends. Jim’s final employment was with Southwest Horizon School Division as a bus driver from 2017 until the deterioration of his health in the fall of 2022. Jim founded the Redcoats of the Northwest Reenactment and along with his troop, proudly escorted and provided an honor guard for the VIPs at the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair for many years. The reenactment group travelled to many communities throughout Manitoba, attending parades, sharing and teaching some of our heritage at the weekend encampments. Jim, with his love of horses and this history, was asked by a Royal Canadian Mounted Police friend to be one of two trail bosses for the 1999 March West, leaving Emerson May 8th and riding 21 days, accompanied by his faithful trail and camp hands Lois (mother), Geri (sister) and Carol. After a day’s ride of sometimes 20 kilometers, camp was set up in the next community which always provided a hearty supper and tasty send off breakfast. There was never a dull moment in Jim’s life. He always looked forward to his hunting, fishing and quadding trips with son Scott and brothers, Rick, Rod, Maurice, Warren and brothers-in-law, Doug and Garry, as well as several close friends. He often quoted “it was male bonding time!” Another favorite weekend adventure was 3D bow shooting with his entire family. Jim loved playing darts and took great pleasure in challenging the girls to a round, often heckling their shot. The winners will be left to your imagination!
The fall of 2022, Jim and Carol moved from the farm into Souris, enjoying town life with family and friends. Clear Lake was our second home and very often included ice cream, fishing, tubing and always darts at the cook shack. Jim was a true blue family man. His proudest moments in life was introducing his son Scott along with “his” three girls, Wanda, Jordan and Brooke ~ how he loved them!
The celebration of Jim’s life will be held at Souris Glenwood Community Hall, Saturday, August 17th 2024, at 2:00 p.m. Bishop Jim Njegovan will officiate. A private family interment will be held at Souris Glenwood Cemetery with a reception to follow in the hall. In honor of Jim, donations can be made to Souris District Hospital Palliative Care Fund c/o Prairie Mountain Health, Box 10, Souris, MB R0K 2C0.
