With deep sadness, the family announces the passing of Ernest Paul Thompson, on Friday, August 9, 2024, at the Selkirk Regional Health Centre. We are so grateful for the kindness and care he received there.
He is predeceased by his sister Trudy and survived by his wife of 48 years, Yvonne, son Steven, his wife Sonora, stepson Jason and grandchildren Kaylee Bower, husband Aaron and Alysha.
Paul was born in the town of Arcola, Saskatchewan on May 9, 1940. As a youth, he worked at his father’s men’s apparel shop. He enjoyed waterskiing, he also played baseball and hockey for the Regina Pats.
Upon arriving as a young adult in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Paul worked at the Pembina hotel for a few years, then became a salesman for Redken hair products. During this time, he received several speeding tickets on the highway while rushing to his next sales destination.
Some years later, Paul worked for Purolator Courier. He eventually became the District Manager for Western Canada.
After his 10-15 year stay at Purolator, Paul decided he needed a change. He moved to Selkirk, bought and ran the Dairy Queen in town. His family enjoyed many ice cream cakes as a result.
Anyone who met Paul would know he enjoyed food. He loved to recount upon his favorite meals and restaurants both locally and abroad. His love of BBQ and his expertise in cooking it was unsurpassed. We will miss enjoying the wonderful meals he prepared.
Sports were always a passion for Paul. While living in Winnipeg after his playing days were over, he became a referee for the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. He held season tickets for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, the Goldeyes and for all versions of the Winnipeg Jets, In Selkirk he volunteered his time for the Selkirk Steelers.
Paul loved travel and vacations with his wife Yvonne. They loved going to Maui or Cancun every other year and their trips to the southern states and British Columbia. Yvonne is so happy and appreciative to have shared so many wonderful experiences and memories with Paul.
In Selkirk, Paul treasured the relationships that were developed with neighbours nearby his home on Belanger Place. He enjoyed the many gatherings and conversations over the 30 plus years. In the last few years, he was blessed and thankful to have such caring, helpful friends.
Paul was a wonderful man, and he will be greatly missed.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, August 19, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel, Selkirk, MB.
Any donation to Diabetes Canada would be greatly appreciated.
