BERNARD HINK

April 21,1931 - August 23, 2024

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Bernard at the age of 93. He died peacefully on August 23, 2024, with his family by his side.

He is lovingly remembered by Selma, his wife of 59 years, son Tim (Linda), daughter Janice; grandchildren, Carly (Richard and children Natalie, Amelia, and Blake), and Trevor; step-grandchildren, Brittany (Joey) and Brian (daughter Victoria); and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Anton and Elizabeth (Mayer) Hink, brothers, Andy, Joe, Rudy, Tony, Ron, Edmund, and Len, and sisters Anne, Mary, and Clara.

Bernard resided in Winnipeg and was born and raised on a farm near Miami, MB. In 1948, he graduated from high school in Morden and was the recipient of the Governor General’s Medal. Due to the post-Second World War teacher shortage, Bernard enrolled in a six-week summer school course to become a permit teacher. Later he received a B.Ed. from the University of Manitoba and a D.D.S. from the University of Toronto. He taught school for six years and practiced children's dentistry for 20 years.

One of Bernard’s passions in life was travel, leading him to explore over 20 countries, often making use of his Spanish lessons. He recently enjoyed reminiscing fondly about family vacations and our epic road trips. In his retirement years, he took pleasure in playing cards, especially bridge and cribbage. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with Selma.

In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place, and his ashes were interred during a private service at the Neil Bardal Garden of Memories.

In lieu of flowers, a donation in his name may be made to Parkinson Canada or a charity of your choice.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Our deepest condolences to all Bernard's family, friends and relatives. I first met Bernard in 1948 when our family came to Canada from Germany. In 1958 I met him again in Winnipeg where I started my new job with the weekly newspaper, the Transcona News. I didn't really know anybody so we were hanging out together for a while. We even double dated at one time and over the years we kept in touch and meeting at family reunions and other occasions. We will miss him and hope to continue keeping in touch with his family. - Posted by: Frank and Michelle Hink (Cousin) on: Sep 13, 2024
