On August 28, 2024, one month and one day after celebrating her 100th birthday, Betty was called home by God.
Born Elizabeth Sutherland Henderson Butchard in Edinburgh, Scotland on July 27, 1924, the only child of James and Margaret Butchard, Betty spent her formative years in a happy, loving home. It was here that she learned the value of building relationships with family and friends. She was especially close with her cousin Helen, with that relationship growing stronger over time and across the ocean.
She graduated from school in 1940 which coincided with the outbreak of the Second World War. Mum joined Edinburgh’s Fire Service as a telephonist/stenographer, serving there until she immigrated to Canada. During the Second World War years she forged many relationships with colleagues and friends and it was at this dark time in history that she met her husband James, a member of the R.C.A.F. Betty immigrated to Canada in the spring of 1947 and married Jim in June 1947 where they started their life in Deloraine, MB.
As a supportive partner helping her husband recover from his Second World War experiences and pursuing his educational goals, Betty worked and volunteered in many Winnipeg institutions including Deer Lodge Hospital and the Winnipeg Free Press.
Mum and Dad settled in Winnipeg and raised their children, Glenn and Peggy in the family home in River Heights. In addition to being a supportive, loving wife and excellent mother she also provided care to her ailing mother-in-law in the family home and in 1962 Jim and Betty welcomed her parents to that same bungalow until their deaths. As the family matriarch Mum ensured every member of her family was not only provided for but loved and cared for.
She applauded the accomplishments of her children and shared in their life’s journeys with care, concern and love. Her role increased as she became a grandmother and relished the new name of ‘Grams’. Her three granddaughters were the recipients of time spent in many situations filled with love and support.
Mum was very active in the life and work of Westworth United Church, both as an employee and as a volunteer, making many lifelong friendships along the way. Betty, together with her friends, enjoyed pursuing and supporting the arts community and attending Winnipeg Blue Bomber games well into her 80s.
In addition to the church, Mum was also active in supporting community organizations such as the Canadian Cancer Society and the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Betty loved the adventure of travels and whether her trips took her throughout Manitoba, across Canada or home to visit family in Scotland, and explore the European continent, she easily forged new friendships. Once a friend, always a friend and Betty never forgot you.
Predeceased by her parents, James and Margaret Butchard, her husband James Aitchison and daughter-in-law Donna Aitchison, Betty is survived by her son Glenn Aitchison, daughter Margaret (Peggy) Aitchison, granddaughters, Amanda (David) Dowbenko, Jane (Kevin) Swain and Heather Wittick, four great-grandchildren, Tessa and Dexter Dowbenko and Rylee and Casey Swain, all of Winnipeg. Betty is also survived by cousins, nieces and nephews in Scotland, Canada and the United States. She also is dearly missed by her goddaughter Carolyn, with whom she shared a deep and lasting bond.
We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to all the staff at West Park Manor Personal Care Home for providing Mum with professional, dignified and compassionate care during these past six years.
A celebration of Mum’s life will be held on Thursday, September 12, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. Westworth United Church, 1750 Grosvenor Avenue, Winnipeg with Rev. Tricia Gerhard, officiating.
If desired, donations can be made in Mum’s memory to Westworth United Church or to the charity of one’s choice.
