WILLIAM (BILL) BYGARSKI

193 - 2024

William (Bill) Bygarski, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully at Fairview Personal Care Home on Friday, August 30, 2024.

Bill was born in Brandon to Helen (Kusela) and Peter Bygarski on July 10, 1932. He grew up in the north end of Brandon. He met his wife Isabel Thom while heckling her at a school baseball game. As friends, they would meet at the roller rink and at the United Grill where they went for cakes afterwards. The 16th Street Beach and Kirkham’s Bridge were also favourite spots in their teenage years. They started dating in 1952 and started their life journey together on May 11, 1957.

They built their first house in Brandon in 1957. Bill bought 50 hives of bees in 1968. In 1970, Bill and Isabel built their second house on an acreage south of Brandon and Bill continued his dream of raising honey bees and creating Bygarski’s Honey Farm. Bill was very proud of his bees and hive products and won several awards at honey shows in Brandon, Winnipeg and Toronto. Bill spent most of his life promoting honey bees and honey.

Bill and Isabel also spent happy days at Wargatie Lake where they renovated a lake front cottage. Never one to be idle, Bill took up wood carving and won awards in local events and his carvings are in collections across the prairies.

Bill was predeceased by his parents, Peter and Helen Bygarski; wife Isabel; and his in-laws, Lillian and Jim Judson and Sandy Thom. He is survived by sister-in-law Gwen Thom; daughter Sandra (Raymond); son Bill (Valerie); granddaughters, Katherine (Gareth), Elizabeth (Bryan), Meganne (Kody); and great-grandchildren, Madison, Wesley, Joshua, Alden, Frasier, Milo, Quinn and Elayne, along with several nieces and nephews.

In keeping with Bill’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a private Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Memorial donations in memory of Bill may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society or to The Fairview Foundation C/O Fairview Care Home Brandon.

We would like to extend gratitude to family, friends and the staff at Fairview for the support and care in Bill’s life.

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • On behalf of myself and my mom, Rose-Marie Bradley (nee Laskin), our Condolences to the family. Bill always made sure to stock us up with honey when he came to visit us in BC and when my mom went to visit him and Isabel on the farm. He was one of my mom's favorite cousins. - Posted by: Kim Bradley (Cousin) on: Sep 13, 2024

  • Heartfelt condolences to the entire Bygarski family. My Dad, Pat, was Bill’s best friend since childhood. There were many stories of hunting, swimming, and general mischief around The Experimental Farm where my Dad grew up and close to where Bill grew up. I have a pic from about 5 years ago where they were sitting around the table having a shot of rye still shooting the bull. Our family grew up on “Garski’s” honey, as my young son dubbed it, and we all love it to this day. Bill and Dad were cut from the same cloth and had qualities we seldom see nowadays. They were two tough prairie kids from a generation that knew hardship. They were also fierce card players. I miss the days around the table when they would try to win all my “Vancouver” money when I was in town. RIP Bill. Hope you are once again playing cards with Dad, Molly and Isabelle. • Extending deep and heartfelt sympathy to the Bygarski family. Sincerely, Karyn (nee Teresko) and Dave Ash Toronto - Posted by: Karyn Ash (Cousin) on: Sep 09, 2024

  • I remember Bill fondly. In the late 80's I built a home about a mile away from the Honey Farm. I used to drop by to buy honey and chat will Bill and his wife. He was a kind, friendly man. When I had small boys a few years later, I would bring them by to meet them (along with Chance the Collie!) and taste the honey. He was just a great guy! I am so very sorry for you loss! - Posted by: Pat Hannah (Neighbour/Friend) on: Sep 07, 2024
