ADELLA FRANCES DEWART

(nee MURPHY)

Adella Frances Dewart (nee Murphy) passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 29, 2024. Mom was able to stay home until her last 11 days and lived in the same house for almost 70 years which she and dad designed and had built for them.

She was predeceased by her husband Henry Dewart, siblings - Claude (Peggy) Murphy, June Snell, Jim (Helen) Murphy, Florence (Lorne) Shane, Irma (Bill) Johns, Claire Murphy, Jack Murphy and Dorothy Rampur.

Della is survived by sons, Mark and Tim (Denise) and many nieces and nephews.

Mom was the fifth of nine children and the first one to be born on the mixed farm of Luke and Clara (Myrfield) Murphy near Rama, Saskatchewan.

She enjoyed her childhood on the farm and often talked about riding horses, milking cows, Christmas concerts, country dances and playing cornet in the Mainroad School Band.

Della took a secretarial course at Success Business College in Winnipeg and worked for Picardy Candy Ltd. and Sherwin Williams Paints where she met her future husband Henry Dewart. Mom and dad were married in 1950.

While raising her two boys, mom completed her Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Winnipeg taking night courses over a number of years. She then re-entered the workforce with the Tupper & Adams law firm and later became a Reference Department Reader’s Advisor with the Winnipeg Public Library (Brooklands and Westwood branches) where she often knew the answer without looking it up. Mom was extremely well read and knowledgeable about a great many things, had a great sense of humour and was quick with a quip.

Della loved music as well and opera in particular. She had learned to chord on the piano while on the farm and continued to play by ear for many years after.

Mom and dad loved to travel. They started touring the US and Canada in the 1949 Ford and eventually the family joined them for road trips.

Della travelled to all 50 US states, 10 provinces, the Yukon, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

In later years, mom volunteered at the St. Charles School Library and as Deer Lodge Senior Centre Book Club Coordinator. Mom helped Mark to create the country retreat where many gatherings were held. She was also a prolific baker and as an animal lover cared for a succession of Tim’s and Denise’s dogs. Patrick held a special place in her heart.

At mom’s request, there will not be a formal funeral service.

Donations in Della’s memory can be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, MB R3T 0R3. Telephone (204) 982-2041 or donations@winnipeghumanesociety.ca
