IDA NEWTON

On August 15, 2024 Ida passed peacefully, surrounded by family, at River Park Gardens, just weeks short of her 106th birthday. Her lifetime spanned two global pandemics and a world war. She witnessed introduction of rural electrification, television, Velcro and virtual reality.

She is missed and will be remembered by her children Ross (Debbie), Janice (Jon), and Joann (Steve), her grandchildren Tara, Graham (Nicole), Stacy (Brad), Tyler (Karly), and Matthew, her five great-grandchildren and nieces, nephews and friends. Ida was predeceased by her husband Frank of 56 years, and her siblings William “Bill”, Robert “Barney” and Leonora “Nonie” Bolton.

Ida grew up in Neelin MB where she met Frank and they were married after the war. The family moved to Cartwright in 1956 and to Winnipeg in 1969. Although her career was primarily a homemaker, she didn’t hesitate to join the work force during the war and when the family needed extra support while Frank changed careers due to medical issues.

As long as she was able, Ida was an active member of the Anglican Church, playing the organ, teaching Sunday School, holding Junior Auxiliary meetings for young girls and holding the job of secretary treasurer of the Women’s Auxiliary. She was an avid curler and among her proudest achievements was an “8 ender” at Thistle Curling Club in 1973. She had an amazing ability at mental math, played and taught piano, and enjoyed long walks and playing “crib”.

Many thanks to the staff at River Park Gardens and Reliable Health Care Inc. especially Jasdeep and Arshpreet for their care and compassion.

Ida will be laid to rest at her hometown at a small family ceremony. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
