JEAN ELLENOR JOHNSTON
Jean Ellenor Johnston passed away peacefully at the Wawanesa Personal Care Home on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, at the age of 96.
Jean was born and raised in Nesbitt, MB where she received her education before going on to become a teacher. She taught in numerous small towns including Isabella, MB where she met her future husband Lyall. She and Lyall married in 1957 and then moved to Wawa, ON where she taught until they settled in Thompson, MB in 1970. She spent many years teaching at R.D. Parker Collegiate in Thompson and then moved to Deerwood Elementary School where she taught until she retired. In 1990 Jean and Lyall moved to Brandon to enjoy their retired life.
Jean always loved to travel and took many holidays travelling around Canada and the United States. While working, Jean’s winters were spent curling and summers were spent fishing and enjoying the outdoors at their cottage at Paint Lake. After retirement, winters were spent in Texas, Australia and Victoria and during the summer they were travelling around southern Manitoba and Saskatchewan golfing and “going for lunch”.
Jean was a very adventurous and inquisitive person who was always wanting to learn something new. She loved trivia, crossword puzzles and doing sudokus. Her passion for Canadian history was evident in her teaching as well as the trivia competitions at Victoria Landing.
Left to hold her memory dear are her sister-in-law Marypat Johnston; nephew Cal; nieces, Kelly, Sally, Nancy, Leanne and Glenda, as well as numerous extended relatives and friends.
Jean was predeceased by her loving husband of 54 years, Lyall Johnston; parents, Edith and Stanley Livingston; brothers, Alvin (Marg) Livingston and Stanley Livingston; brothers-in-law, Burton (Elma) Johnston and Claire Johnston.
A celebration of Jean’s life will take place at Memories Chapel, 330 18th Street North, Brandon, MB, on Saturday, October 5, 2024, at 2:30 p.m. A private family interment will take place at a later date.

Mrs. Johnston was my grade 6 teacher at Deerwood School in Thompson and she instilled in me a love of history that I have always carried. The Johnston’s were also wonderful and generous neighbours. I remember one particular afternoon when I went with my dad to their house. As my Dad talked with Mr. Johnston, Mrs. Johnston took me to the kitchen table and shared with me pictures and stories of her travels, throwing in as much of a history lesson as she possibly could. I adored her and I went on to become a teacher myself. My deepest condolences to her family. Please know that she affected many of her students and she was well loved in return. - Posted by: Karla Turton (Former student ) on: Sep 16, 2024
