SHIRLEY THORA KOZUB

(nee JOHNSON)

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Shirley Kozub at the age of 87 years old.

Shirley was born on August 1, 1937 and spent her first 15 years in Howardville, Manitoba. In the winter she remembered travelling to school in a horse drawn caboose and how her poor father must have completely despaired because they were forever burning the cabooses right down to the sleigh trying to keep warm. At 15 years old she went to work in Winnipeg with her eldest sister. She married her loving husband, Jerry, on July 5, 1958 and remained happily married for 66 years until her passing.

Shirley is survived by her husband Jerry; daughter, Kim Sawatzky (Ben); son Mark (Caroline); grandchildren, Brian, Ashley (Dan), Chad, Athena, Melina; grandson-in-law Dan Kotulas; great-grandchildren, Oliver and Brooke; sister, Sophia Stanowski; sister, Margaret Palka (Gordon); brother Donald; sister-in-law Dianne LaRue (Phillip); sister-in-law Elma Kozub; sister-in-law Joan Kozub; brother-in-law Ronald Kozub (Loraine); sister-in-law Karen Kozub; also many nieces, nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, Bjorn and Enid Johnson; in-laws, Ted and Annie Kozub; son, Trevor (2005); granddaughter Amanda (2022); brother George (1988), brother-in-law John Stanowski (2016), brother Harold (2018); sister-in-law Betty (2020); sister-in-law Joan Johnson (2021); brother-in-law Wilfred (2020); brother-in-law William (2023), brother-in-law Reginald (2024).

Shirley was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses at the age of 13 and actively shared Bible truths with others about Jehovah God and his Kingdom as the only solution to mankind's problems, including sickness and death. She drew great comfort from the scripture in Philippians 4:6,7 and relied on the 'peace of God' to help her through many of life's challenges. She will be greatly missed by her family, friends and the congregation, but we are comforted by the Bible's promise of a resurrection to perfect life, and health on a paradise earth. (Revelation 21:4), (Isaiah 25:8).

The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the staff at Betel Personal Care Home in Selkirk, Manitoba for their dedicated service and heartfelt care.

A memorial service will be held at the Kingdom Hall Centre of Jehovah's Witnesses, 227 Lakewood Blvd., on Saturday, September 28, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. The service will also be available on Zoom.

  • My memories of Shirley go back a long way, to 1956, her kindness, when her and Margie had a suite upstairs in a house on south Maryland St. I had recently moved to Winnipeg and was working at the Bank of Montreal, as both Shirley and Margie had done some months earlier to work at Eatons..Margie and I had been good friends since school days, (not forgetting you Jerry, how we went all thru school together, from grade one).. ...When I think back, how thankful I am for those early days with Shirley and Margie, how they included me.. and how they made the move to Winnipeg more bearable... My sincerest condolences, Jerry and family..on the loss of your wife and Mother. I’m sure you have a lot of wonderful memories as well, Treasure those memories.. My thoughts are with you, 🌹🌹🌹 Judy Tait (Gillis) - Posted by: Judy Tait (Gillis) (Friend) on: Sep 15, 2024

  • Shirley and Jerry were great neighbors, we moved beside them when the kids were small. They were always ready with a helping hand.
