JESSIE ANNE PENNER

(née LOEWEN)

March 29, 1936 – September 18, 2024

Jessie Penner (nee Loewen) of Brandon, MB, passed away at Fairview Home, on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, at the age of 88.

Jessie was born at home on March 29, 1936, to Jacob and Agatha Loewen of Moore Park, MB. She had four older siblings; Walter, Erica, Jake, and Martha and one younger sister; Ruth. Jessie had many wonderful memories of childhood including playing with her siblings and friends and attending vacation Bible school which was in their home. One of her happiest memories is that of giving her life to Jesus at age 11, whom she continued to love and serve her entire life. Jessie went to school in Justice, MB and then moved to Winnipeg to complete grade 12. After 2 months of summer school, she taught school in the Griswold area for a year.

Jessie met her handsome Dave at the age of 16 while attending a wedding and, in her words, “hit if off really well”. They would meet at Eaton’s department store after a piano lesson, at City Hall for a musical opera, or for wiener roasts at the Brandon Fair. Dave proposed to Jessie in June 1955 and on October 22nd of the same year they were married. They spent nearly 68 wonderful years together.

In 1957 Dave and Jessie bought a farm north of Douglas and in their early years together farm life kept them busy but gave them much joy. Alongside raising five children, Jessie tended to a large garden and helped with the raising of chickens and milking cows. In 1965 they built a new house and finally had running water and warm floors, much to Jessie’s delight. They lived on the farm until 1989 and then retired to Brandon. Once off the farm, life for Jessie took on a new look. She became involved in Christian Women’s Club and began speaking across Manitoba and North Dakota; sharing her story and love for Jesus. She also enjoyed meeting people through the selling of Avon products. Together, Jessie and Dave travelled to Texas several winters with their fifth-wheel trailer and developed many wonderful friendships. They also enjoyed camping at Clear Lake and Jessie spent many hours reading in the sun.

Jessie loved raising her children and is remembered as ‘always being there’. She attended many hockey, football and soccer games, piano recitals, science fairs, and school concerts. She always had sweet treats in the freezer, and it would be remiss if she didn’t have hotdogs and pie on Saturday nights for good ol’ Hockey Night in Canada. But more than anything, Jessie will be remembered as one who was strong in her faith and prayed for her family. She truly believed Psalm 100:5 which says, “For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations” and is now rejoicing with the Lord in His love.

Jessie was predeceased by her beloved husband, Dave; her brothers, Walter and Jake; her sisters, Erica (Jake) Harder and Ruth (Charlie) Charboneau; and her grandsons, Landon Penner and Jackson Penner.

She has left to mourn her sister, Martha (Ross) McMillan of Boissevain; her sister-in-law, Margaret Loewen of Brandon; her children, Larry (Jennifer), Rick (Nancy), Kelly (MaryAnn), Wendy, and David (Theresa); her grandchildren, Tim (Heidi) Penner, Amanda (Jeff) Leighton, Stephanie (John) Baron, Kendra Penner, McKenna Penner, Ryleigh Penner, and Ashton Penner; and her great-grandchildren, Ava, Bella, Austin and Sawyer Penner, and James and Merrick Leighton.

Jessie was laid to rest beside her husband, Dave at Sparling Cemetery on Thursday, September 26th, 2024. A Memorial Reception celebrating Jessie’s life followed at Memories Chapel.
