NORMA COBAIN
It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Norma Cobain in Winnipeg at the age of 88 years.
Predeceased by her husband David, and son Colin.
She leaves to mourn her daughter Marion, son-in-law Leo, grandson Justin, sisters, Mary (George) and Margaret (Cleve), and many relatives in Canada and Northern Ireland.
Norma was born in Belfast to Gilbert and Victoria Trew. She was the middle child in a family of five and had a happy and active childhood. She described herself as a tomboy who preferred to roller skate, ride a bike, or do Irish dancing instead of cooking or sewing. She had beautiful curly, red hair which she considered both a blessing and a curse and she hated being called “Ginger”. It was through a church youth group that she met the love of her life, David, when she was 15. They weathered the storms of life together in a loving, caring marriage of 67 years.
David, Norma and Marion immigrated to Canada in 1963. Their son and brother Colin was born in Winnipeg in 1965. Tragically, the family suffered the worst loss imaginable when Colin died at 11 years old of leukemia. Norma turned this tragedy into something positive by returning to school in her 40s and becoming a nurse. She spent many happy and fulfilling years working at Deer Lodge Hospital as a kind-hearted and empathetic caregiver. She demonstrated by example the values of hard work and diligence, resilience and persistence. And, her deep faith in God was a source of strength and support to her throughout her life.
Norma loved animals and had a special bond with her dog buddy, ‘Bear’. She kept a spotless and well-decorated home and she loved it when people compared it to a "show home". She outgrew her childhood aversion to cooking and made the best pies and dainties, she had an eclectic taste in music and filled our home and hearts with beautiful music. She was a member of Village Green and enjoyed participating in English Country dancing.
The family extends their thanks to her various caregivers at The Rosewood, Victoria Hospital and Actionmarguerite (St. Boniface). We also thank her friends who kept her in their thoughts or visited her over the last few years. It was greatly appreciated.
A private family service will be held with interment at Glen Eden Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in her memory to the charity of your choice.
