LORRAINE C. TARASKA
With a profound sense of loss, we announce the sudden passing of Lorraine Taraska from cancer on Thursday, September 19, 2024.
She is survived by her husband Vincent, her daughters, Karen Taraska-Alcock (John Vander Linden), Kathy (Paul Berke), Victoria Taraska (Harry Blackwood) and Valerie Taraska, along with her grandchildren, Sarah, Matthew and Christina (Karen), Breanne and Nicole (Kathy), Ben and John (Victoria), Delilah and Sloan (Valerie) as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews, and her Aunt Ollie Prociuk.
Born July 31, 1943, as the youngest daughter of Mary and Peter Bachinsky, Lorraine had one sister, Patricia Bestick, and together they grew up and attended school in St. Boniface. Early in life, she found her sweetheart Vincent. They married and shared the next 61 years of their life together. While Vince was still doing his medical residency, they had four wonderful daughters: Karen, Kathy, Victoria, and Valerie. While raising them, Lorraine went back to university to pursue a career in finance. She earned various degrees from the University of Manitoba including Bachelor of Arts and Commerce (Honours), Chartered Accountancy and Fellow of Chartered Accountants designations.
There are many ways one can describe Lorraine. A skilled Chartered Accountant, sought after for her tremendous expertise in finance and accounting. A devout Catholic, deeply committed to her faith, church and diocese. A dedicated and tireless volunteer, who never shied away from lending her time, talents, and treasures to those who needed them most. However, these titles are simply by-products that stem from who Lorraine truly was - A strong and fiercely independent woman who understood the importance of family and community.
Lorraine was a successful businesswoman. She believed in working harder and smarter. She became an absolute powerhouse, eventually breaking the glass ceiling within her profession to become the first female president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Manitoba.
Lorraine gave her time, energy and support to causes that were important to her. She volunteered at her own parishes, doing the books, organizing events, directing the choir, and as a Member of the Catholic Women’s League. She also served on the finance committee of the Archdiocese of Winnipeg, as well as on many faith-based boards and committees including the Charleswood Refugee Ecumenical Sponsorship Team, House of Peace, Kateri Tekakwitha Parish, L’Arche Winnipeg, Misericordia Health, Our Lady of the Missions, San Raphael Treatment Centre, Serra Club of Winnipeg, St. Joseph’s Residence, St. Paul’s College, and Wolseley Family Place. She also served on the board of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and helped countless other organizations in Manitoba. For her passion, dedication, and years of service she won many esteemed awards including the CPA Foundation Impact Award, and the CPA Manitoba Community Service Award.
Lorraine will be remembered for her creativity. When she needed to re-charge, Lorraine found joy in her intricate crewel work, macrame and other crafts. Her hands were always busy making something beautiful. She also had a passion for computer and digital games.
As we honour and celebrate Lorraine’ life, we would like you to remember a life well-lived. One where she demonstrated to her daughters, colleagues, and others that motherhood could be balanced with a trailblazing career. One full of compassion, richer and fuller by using her talents and God’s gifts to improve the lives of others.
Lorraine believed that the backbone of life was togetherness, and what truly made her smile was doing things for her family and circle of friends. She loved hosting Friday night Canasta games, bridge nights, dinner parties, and her annual Boxing Day Feast, and weekly Sunday Suppers.
Lorraine will be remembered as a loyal wife, a loving mother, and a Gma who spoiled her grandkids. She taught us that love is not only demonstrated through her many grand gestures, but also the little moments in between. We will also remember her many checking-in emails, jokes and recipes, and that she showed up to celebrate all our important events. The world was simply a better place with her in it, and we will miss her everyday.
We would like to thank the health care teams at Health Sciences Centre and Riverview Health Centre for their kind and compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you donate to a charity of our choice.
A funeral mass will be held at St. Vital Parish, 1629 Pembina Highway, Winnipeg, Thursday, September 26, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. A reception will follow.
