I started violin lessons with Lillian when I was 3 and continued until I was almost 8. During that time I spent a lot of time at their house. (I still call their old house in Morris the Toews house). Art was the Principal of Morris school when I started Kindergarten. I was unaware that it was frowned upon (and not general practise) to leave class to find him in his office to visit for cookies. I did not realize other students also did not prefer to eat their cookies while sitting on his lap. He was always happy welcoming and kind. Lillian and Art were an extension of my family when I was small. I remember the first time I said I love you to Lillian. Having no grandma in my life it was nice to have her and Art. When I think of them I do so with the fondest of hearts. I’m so very sorry for your family’s loss. - Posted by: Victoria Dearborn (Former student ) on: Oct 05, 2024

Arthur was our much-loved brother-in-law. He came into our family many decades ago, and had the wonderful knack of making us younger members feel valued. We loved his sense of humour, his love of history, his kindness, and many contributions to community: family member, choir conductor, teacher, basketball coach, executor, historian, story-teller. He will surely be missed - but not forgotten. - Posted by: Eleanor and Corey (Brother-in-law) on: Oct 03, 2024

Art was always a kind man with a great sense of humor. Next to his family his great love was teaching. This was his passion and he was the best! An example of his humor was all his children and his wife were exceptionally talented at music and he and I would joke how we could play too - the radio, the TV, etc. My condolences to his family and friends. - Posted by: Sherry Liley (Ex-daughter in-law) on: Oct 02, 2024

I really hated school. I thought (and still have the same opinion) that it was a complete waste of time. That being said, Art Toews’ classes were a contrast to the utter boredom endured at Morris Collegiate from 1973- 1977. He was able to challenge this student in a way that gave satisfaction in solving abstract math and geometry puzzles. Unfortunately, I didn’t realize the talent and technique at the time, but that has never happened again. He was truly a treasure. I am thankful to have had the privilege of being his student. - Posted by: Curtis Penner (Student) on: Sep 30, 2024

Arthur Toews was my Opa and one of the kindest, intelligent, and most caring individuals I have ever met. Some of my earliest memories occur on the couch of his Winnipeg apartment, playing Scrabble on a summer afternoon. When I flip through my collection of books, I am often met with his handwriting, lovingly scrawled on the inside page: “To Lauren, enjoy. Love, Opa”. Sometimes he’d return from errands with a book from McNally Robinson, or sit down with my brother and I to read us our favourite stories. Most of all, I am grateful for the love he showed my mom as a child. I can see his compassionate, wise, and generous spirit in her everyday. Opa, you are endlessly loved. Thank you for being a wonderful person. ❤️ - Posted by: Lauren (Grandchild) on: Sep 28, 2024

Art was my grade seven teacher in Morris in 1961, I think. He was a great teacher and I really liked him. I took my first instruction in German from him. I intended on visiting him at the PCH he was living in but I'm too late. Sorry Art. May God's comforting presence be with his family at this time. - Posted by: Jim Vickers (former student) on: Sep 28, 2024

Mr. Toews was my patient math teacher at Morris Collegiate and despite me being convinced I would never master geometry, I did! He was a favorite teacher to so many and always an encourager. He cared about his students and I will always fondly remember him as one of the teachers who inspired me and made me feel anything was possible. Sincere condolences to his family. - Posted by: Shirley (Klassen) Reimer (former student) on: Sep 28, 2024
