DOUGLAS JOHN STANLEY GRAYSTON

August 16, 1948 - September 29, 2024

With great sadness, we announce the passing of our husband, father, and grandfather Doug Grayston at the age of 76. Linda was always there for him and was by his side as he passed peacefully on Sunday morning.

Predeceased by his parents, John and Jonina Grayston, he is survived by his loving wife Linda (nee Slingsby), daughters, Heather Dzwonek (Jim Miller) and Amanda Guerreiro (Bob), sister Margaret Anderson, grandchildren, Erik Dzwonek and Alexander and Addison Guerreiro, nephews, Mark Slingsby-Behrendt, John and Todd Anderson, and niece Donna Garofalo.

Born John Stanley Grayston, little "Stanley" showed his independence early. When asked what his name was, he would reply "Doug". When he was three, his adoring parents, Jack and Nin, had his birth certificate amended to read "Douglas John Stanley Grayston".

Doug was a life-long resident of Brooklands. It was in 1968 that he and Linda met on a hayride with the gang of friends from the neighbourhood. They each knew they had met their match from the start. They married the following year. Their first born was Heather and, several years later, the family was complete when Mandy arrived.

Lake Winnipeg was always a special place for Doug. As a child, he spent his summers at Loney Beach in Gimli. With his own family, many happy memories were made at the cabin at Grindstone. Doug could spend hours sitting near the water. Doug developed a love of sailing, and he was always ready to take everyone skiing and tubing behind the motorboat. Doug was involved with the cottage association and even donned the Smokey-the-Bear costume for Grindstone Days in the sweltering heat. He passed his love of Lake Winnipeg to his children and grandchildren.

Doug began working at Great-West Life in 1970 and retired in 2007. Both Heather and Mandy also work at Canada Life and have heard many stories of what a wonderful leader and colleague he was.

Doug had many interests that spanned all seasons. During the warm months, much time was spent relaxing at the cabin, but he was always up for taking a break from the cabin to go on adventure-packed cross-country camping road trips with Erik and Linda. Over the years, the long Winnipeg winters were passed curling at Deer Lodge Community Club, exercising at the downtown "Y", spending countless volunteer hours at the Christmas Cheer Board and annual trips to his favourite spots in Mexico.

In addition to being an amazing husband, father, and grandfather he was also an uncle, brother, cousin, friend and more. His sense of humour will stay with us always. During his battle with Parkinson’s Disease, he never complained. He continued to smile and make jokes through the most daunting health challenges.

Our family is grateful for the kind staff at Fred Douglas Lodge, the health care aides from WRHA, and the caring team from Comfort Keepers who always came through for us. Doug’s life was enriched by these terrific caregivers.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Doug’s memory may be made to Fred Douglas Society, Parkinson Canada, or your favourite charity.
