LILLIAN ANNIE DORIS FIJAL

(nee BEYER)

It is with great sadness that the family of Lillian Fijal announce her passing on September 9, 2024 at the age of 97.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Wayne (Wilmi), Joanne (Michael), Lori (Ian), Tom (Desiree), Janet (Randy); grandchildren, Matthew, Anna (Daniel), Christopher (Rachel), Deanna, Zachary (Kirsten), Ivy (Joel), Leah (Dan), Alyssa (Andrew), Derek (Tiffany); step-grandchildren, Amanda (Cam), Erin, Sam, Joey, Javier; great-grandchildren, Tristan, Jack and Rowen and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Roy in 2006, her parents and siblings.

Lillian was born on April 9, 1927 in Dryden, Ontario, the youngest of seven children to Rudolf and Juliana Beyer. Her early years were spent on the family farm in Waldhof, Ontario. Tragically, both of her parents passed away by the time she was 18.

In 1945, her sister Elsie encouraged her to move to the big city of Winnipeg to further her education. On her 18th birthday, Mom started a program at Success Business College where she excelled.

Mom and Dad met in 1946 when they both worked at Martel Stewart. They married in 1947 and raised their five children in their home on Hawthorne Avenue. Summers were spent at the family cottage at Brereton Lake, enjoying nature, picking blueberries, swimming and boating.

Mom was a traditional homemaker while her children were growing up, however she always had a side job to supplement the family income. She sold Studio Girl cosmetics, taught yoga and was a Welcome Wagon Hostess for over 20 years; an accomplishment that she was very proud of and spoke of often.

Family was very important to Mom. This didn’t just consist of the family she was born or married into, but also her neighbors and church family. Mom was a member of North Kildonan United Church for over 50 years and formed many lifelong friendships.

In 1985, Mom and Dad moved to Bonner Avenue, where she resided until 2015, when she moved to River Ridge Retirement Residence. Although the move was sudden due to health reasons, Mom flourished in the RR environment, making many new friends, and enjoying the entertainment and activities.

She endured increasing challenges after her cancer diagnosis in 2015 and stroke in 2023, but they proved no match for her resolve and determination. Staying the course after each setback, she surpassed life expectations many times over.

The family would like to thank Dr. Ralph Wong, for his years of compassionate care and the entire staff at River Ridge 1 Retirement Residence for providing Mom a safe and comforting home.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 16, 2024 at North Kildonan United Church, 174 Pentland Street, Winnipeg.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba.
