HERSHEL GWYNNE (FERGY) FERGUSON

October 10, 1932 -

September 28, 2024

On September 28, 2024, Hershel Gwynne Ferguson passed away peacefully, shortly before his 92nd birthday.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Irene, and is survived by their children, Lori (David), Cathy (Greg), and Bruce (Marj), grandchildren, Jennifer (Dave), Andrew (Leezann), Kevin (Leigh), Hilary, Megan (Bryan), Kyle, and Garrett, great-grandchildren, Théo, Callie, Lily, and Flynn, Irene’s sister, Joan, brother-in-law, Al Schwinghamer, and many nieces and nephews.

Fergy was predeceased by his mother, Beryl, stepfather, Wilfred Hosgood, Irene’s parents, Alexander and Amy McRae, his sister, Phyllis, brother-in-law, Jim MacNeill, their son, Ward, and Irene’s sister, Mary, and brother-in-law, Don Bennett.

Dad went by many names: Gwynne to his sister’s family, Fergy to Irene’s family and friends, Hershel to the Masonic Lodge and Khartum Shrine and, of course, Dad, Grandad and Great-Grandad.

Dad loved airplanes and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force at 17. He served for over 22 years and joined the federal civil service following his honourable discharge. He obtained his Certified General Accountant designation and retired as an Auditor with the Department of National Defence.

Fergy met Irene in 1956. After a courtship mostly by mail, they were married in December 1957. Following several military postings, they settled in Winnipeg. They were world travellers and treasured their time at Devil’s Gap.

Dad was an active volunteer and proud member of the Masonic Lodge and Khartum Shrine. He was an excellent bridge and cribbage player. He played piano and violin and was a very popular dance partner.

He enjoyed playing and watching many sports. He bowled, curled, and golfed well into his later years. He was passionate about the Blue Jays, the Saskatchewan Roughriders (sigh), and the Winnipeg Jets.

He was an avid reader and loved quoting poetry. He had a great sense of humour and wrote many funny poems for family and friends. He was proud of his Scottish heritage and played bagpipe music in the car, much to his grandchildren’s chagrin.

Dad was a very good sport and taught his family to be the same. He was a consummate gentleman who embodied all the positive qualities of the best of men. He was a kind, gentle soul who loved his family and friends and was loved in return.

Special thanks to the staff of Vista Park Lodge for their kind and compassionate care. Cremation has taken place and a private family celebration is planned. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada or a charity of choice.

We love you, Dad. GG (Gone Golfing)
