BRUCE ARNOLD WILBY

It is with sad hearts we announce the passing of Bruce Arnold Wilby on Thursday October 10th, 2024. He passed away with his close friend OJ by his side at the Fred Douglas Lodge where he resided for the last six months fighting cancer and diabetes.

He was predeceased by his mother Dorothy, his father Peter, brother Michael and sister Lorraine. Left to mourn is his brother, Peter, and many friends.

Bruce grew up in Middlechurch and then later moved to St. Vital. He had a few jobs until he was employed by the St. Regis Hotel where he worked for 30 years before retiring. Bruce met Gail, his good friend and later caregiver and companion in 2012. Bruce quickly became a cherished member of Gail’s family and friend’s lives. Bruce was a big St. Louis Blues and Blue Bombers fan, but his real passion was horse racing. He had many favourite trainers and jockeys and followed it avidly.

Bruce was a kind and gentle soul and will be deeply missed.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Thank you to the staff at the Fred Douglas Lodge for all their care and support.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • We lived across the street from the Wilbys and we knew the family well. Dot and Peter were generous people and they brought up their sons to be kind, respectful boys/men. The Wilby yard and pool was a meeting place for many of us and those times remain as very fond memories. Our sincere condolences, Pete. Rest In Peace, Bruce. - Posted by: Karen and Kari Hartikainen (neighbours) on: Oct 21, 2024

  • Growing up in Middlechurch I knew the Wilby’s as neighbors and later I delivered their Tribune Newspaper. They were kind and generous letting the neighbors come for a swim in the hot summer months. Bruce and Peter loved animals and took opportunities to try to feed them, I watched Bruce walk up the hill to catch the Beaver Bus to go to his job and he would always try to feed the squirrels? He was very kind to all of us neighborhood kids, we did surveys for Mrs. Wilby. I live in the same building as Peter, I miss our old neighborhood, Take care! - Posted by: Ken Kowaluk (Winnipeg Tribune Paper Carrier for the Wilby’s) on: Oct 19, 2024
