STANLEY WILLIAM REID

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Stanley William Reid unexpectedly at his home in Winnipeg on Thursday, October 17, 2024.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Elsie; sons, Richard (Wyona) of Alberta, Michael (Karen) of Australia, daughter Nancy (Larry) of Winnipeg, stepson Philip (Irene) of Stonewall, stepdaughter Wendy of Winnipeg; grandsons, Damon of Winnipeg, Denver, Bryce and great-grandson Ryker of Alberta.

Stanley was predeceased by son Bruce, daughter Lorraine, first wife Margaret, sister Trudy and her husband Chuck Shaffer.

Stanley was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on June 14, 1934 to parents, Stanley and Elsie Reid. He spent the duration of his youth as a keen football player. He began his extensive accounting career in 1954 with Chambers Chiswell, earned his Chartered Accountant (CA now CPA) designation in 1957 and was recognized as a Fellow of the Chartered Accountants of Manitoba in the early 2000s. He moved to The Pas with his first wife Margaret and young son Richard in 1957 to open an office for Chambers Chiswell. In 1960 he purchased the practice which became SW Reid and Company Chartered Accountants. He went on to service clients throughout Manitoba including Churchill, Swan River, Snow Lake, Thompson and Flin Flon for over 60 years. Many of his clients became lifelong friends. Stan and Margaret had five children, Bruce, Richard, Lorraine, Michael and Nancy.

Stanley sold the firm in 1994 and continued to work with the purchaser until 2019.

He was a member of many community organizations including being a member of the municipal council for the Town of The Pas, where he was Deputy Mayor and Treasurer and then teaching at the then Keewatin Community College. He was dedicated to whatever he was part of and helped make the community a better place to live. He was the first person appointed as a Marriage Commissioner in Northern Manitoba and over many years with the designation performed many marriages all over the north. He was Treasurer on the Treaty Land Entitlement Committee for the Opasqwayak Cree Nation and was designated as an Honorary Elder of OCN when his term on the committee ended.

In 1989 Stanley married Elsie Forrest. They built a house at his beloved Clearwater Lake where they lived until 2022. They moved to Winnipeg and purchased a condominium and lived a relaxed life. Stanley had many medical issues which made the move to Winnipeg very fortunate.

Stanley was a real personality and a man of many talents. He had a lifelong entrepreneurial spirit and was a passionate builder. He took a genuine interest in every person he met, was very generous and had a quick wit and a cheeky sense of humour.

Stanley will be missed by his family and many friends and business associates throughout Manitoba.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or Diabetes Canada to honour Stan's memory.

At Stanley's request there will be no funeral. His request was for a cremation and to be laid to rest with family by his side.

Condolences & Memories (8 entries)

  • Mike met our daughter Karen over 45 years ago and we got to know Stan through the years as Karen’s father-in-law. But he was more than that. He was always a friend, a family member, lots of fun to be around. We will miss him. Our deepest sympathies to Elsie and the rest of the family. • Stanley, it was a please to have known you for 50 years as my friend’s dad, as my accountant, advisor, business consultant and finally as a retired gentleman. Karen and I were honored to have shared your 90th birthday celebrations in Winnipeg in June with your family, friends and business associates. The memories that were shared during that time were timeless. To Elsie, family members, close friends, our condolences. Stan will not be forgotten. - Posted by: Dave Simes (Friend, business associate) on: Oct 28, 2024

  • I met Stan through a friend when I was looking for work. I found myself flying up to The Pas and boarding in his home with his son and another co-worker. It was tax season and working late was regular but I loved the job. I was surprised to learn that he was friends with my family as they shared hotels in Carberry, Flin Flon and The Pas. One day he came to the kitchen on a Saturday asking me to be a witness to a wedding he was going to perform. Years later, when I got back to Winnipeg I too became a Marriage Commissioner. He treated me like a daughter and friend. Over the years I called him for advice and his comforting suggestions were so appreciated. I have never forgotten the 6 months I lived there, drove his large car, managed the motel and learned more about taxation and accounting, always drinking "tea" as we labored through tax season. Rest in peace, Stan. Condolences to the family as he will be missed. - Posted by: Monique Aquin Graboski (Friend ) on: Oct 26, 2024
