BARBARA MARY MATTHEW

(nee MCDILL)

It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Barbara, only daughter of Joseph and Nora McDill.

Ma led a full life in which she made many friends and touched the lives of many people. As a long time member of the CWL (charter member St. Edwards Council 1951) she organized Mass and Communion services at her Sturgeon Creek II residence. She was very involved with her Catholic Faith and supported numerous charities, which included, but was not limited to Sleeping Children Around the World and Operation Smile. She donated time, money and knitted or crocheted articles that ranged from toques and mitts for Koats for Kids to baby blankets for the Neo-Natal Ward at St. Boniface Hospital.

Barbara graduated from St. Mary’s Academy and not too long after, married her husband Len, the love of her life, whom she had met while they were both growing up on Victor Street in west Winnipeg. They remained together and devoted to each other until Pop passed away in 2008. As their family grew Ma went to work, first at Great West Life and later after graduating from Teacher’s College, working with elementary students in Winnipeg 1 School Division.

Ma enjoyed travel, whether it was Spain and Texas with Len, or Scotland, cruising the Rhine or setting foot on the Great Wall with her daughter-in-law Darla. She was active right to the end looking after the Sturgeon Creek II library or taking part in Active Minds, Jeopardy, field trips to Rainbow Stage and various restaurants, and of course, Happy Hour.

Along with Len, Barbara was predeceased by her brother John Francis, her infant daughter Shawn Marie, brother-in-law “Jack” Matthew and his wife Ruth, and sisters-in-law, Donna McDill and Helen Alm.

She is survived by her brother Don, son Chris and his wife Darla, son Greg, numerous cousins, nephews and nieces and her very good friend and Maid of Honour Mary.

Finally, we would like to mention and thank the staff and residents of Sturgeon Creek II from activity coordinator Karen, Cesne her hairdresser to her table-mates, Bette, Collete, Pat and Anna. To all the staff and residents, thank you very much.
