Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryFREDERICK CHARLES LARWOOD
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Fred Larwood on October 21, 2024, at the McCreary-Alonsa Health Centre in McCreary, Manitoba at the age of 91.
Fred was predeceased by his parents, Alice (Satterthwaite) and Charles Larwood, and his siblings, June (Jim) Bryan, Irene (Henry) Rainkie, Bert Larwood and Marina (Don) Schettler. Fred is survived by many nieces, great-nieces, nephews and great-nephews across Canada, England and Australia.
Fred was born and raised on a small farm in the Town of Norgate, Manitoba on December 11, 1932, and was the second youngest of five children to Alice and Charles Larwood. This included going to school in Turtle Plains while working on the farm.
Fred decided to continue his passion for teaching and left the farm briefly to pursue his education. This included taking his training while under a teacher’s permit at Normal School in Winnipeg, Manitoba. After only six weeks (of a one-year program), Fred was teaching under this permit in Clarksville School (1953 to 1954). Fred taught in many small communities including Amana School (1951 to 1952), and Hamilton School (1959 to 1965) until he received his Permanent First-Class Certificate (Teacher’s Professional Card) from the Department of Education in 1961.
This led to a phone call one day where his profession was needed in the community of Gypsumville, and Lake St. Martin. including a brief teaching requirement in Sandy Bay Ojibway First Nation, leading to his retirement in Gypsumville.
While teaching in Gypsumville, Fred would make the lengthy trek back to the farm in Norgate every weekend.
Fred enjoyed many things. Fred owned cattle and chickens and liked the farm life. He also enjoyed the community activities and was always up to speed with any of the surrounding towns and their upcoming events. This included singing in the choir, dressing up and going to dances and enjoying many sporting events including baseball and hockey.
This helped grow his passion for watching many baseball and hockey games on the TV and you could always find him watching any given game most Sunday afternoons after church. This made him grow as a huge Boston Bruins fan!
Fred was an energetic, enthusiastic and spontaneous person, and would always think positively when a bad situation arose. We will always think about his kind words and thoughtfulness when we need an extra boost.
We would like to thank all the staff of St. Boniface Hospital, Neepawa Hospital and McCreary Alonsa Nursing Home and many friends and family that have helped support Fred throughout the years.
Funeral Service will be held at the Kelwood Community Centre in Kelwood on Saturday, November 2 at 2:00 p.m. with Reverand Chad officiating. Interment will be at the Kelwood Cemetery, followed by lunch and refreshments.
Active Pallbearers will be Derryk, Darren and Dustin Rainkie, Dale and Kyle Shettler and Bryon Larwood. Honorary Pallbearers include many close friends and family.
Flowers may be accepted, but donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, 2300 Yonge St., Suite 1200, Box 2414, Toronto, ON M4P 1E4, or the Canadian Diabetes Association (Diabetes Canada), 310 Broadway #200, Winnipeg, MB R3C 0S6.
Your Kind Words Will Always Be Remembered. Shoot for the Stars Fred!
