Florence May Gray passed away with family by her side, on Wednesday, October 23, 2024 at Dinsdale Personal Care Home.
Florence was born in Kenora, Ontario on April 23, 1923 to Russell and Edith Lough. She had two younger brothers, Jack and Jim.
Upon completion of high school, Florence joined the Canadian Women’s Army Corps in 1942. She completed her basic training in Vermilion, Alberta and was posted to Dundurn, Saskatchewan where she worked as a hospital records clerk for the duration of the war. Florence was most proud of her military service.
Florence returned to Kenora and married Dennis Nairn in 1946. Together they had five children, Dennis (Maxine), Penny (Russell), Patrick (Janice), Patricia (Terje), and Heather.
Over Florence’s 100 plus years, she made several career changes. She worked as Director of Social Services for the city of Brandon, where she was always accepting and understanding of the challenges her families faced. Upon her retirement, she became the owner of a small lingerie shop in Qualicum Beach, BC.
Florence was a person of deep faith. She enjoyed being a very active member of her Church community. She was a member of Knox United Church in Brandon for many years.
Florence loved to travel, especially in Canada. She also treasured the trips she took abroad to Australia and the British Isles. A very memorable trip for Florence and three of her grandchildren was a motor home adventure to Alaska. Her grandchildren fondly remember road trips with Grandma, and in particular, her always singing in the car. They also loved Grandma's many pets, sleepovers and visits, and special Christmases at Grandma's in Kemnay. Florence was a dynamic and active person, and her favourite exercise was swimming which she did daily in the early morning at the Sportsplex for many years.
Florence will be remembered for her sense of humour and her boisterous laugh, as she always believed laughter was the best medicine.
Florence was predeceased by her parents, three nephews and a niece, two brothers and most recently by her oldest son Dennis.
Florence will be lovingly remembered by her three daughters and one son, 12 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and three nieces.
A celebration of Florence's life will take place at a later date.

Our condolences to Florence's family on her passing. Your mom was very much part of my family and my mom and dad's very good friend for many years. She was such a down to earth person with a strong will and opinions about many things. We were always happy to see her over the years and get our hugs and have a hearty laugh!
