Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryIAIN ALISTAIR KIRKWOOD
Iain Alistair Kirkwood passed away peacefully on October 24, 2024, at the Deer Lodge Centre in Winnipeg.
Iain was born on July 9, 1955, in Flin Flon, Manitoba, to recent Scottish immigrants, Hugh and Dorothy Kirkwood. They soon moved south to Brandon, Manitoba, where Iain became big brother to sister Una in 1958. In 1960, the unthinkable happened when Iain sustained a life altering head injury in a fall on the stairs at the East End Community Centre Kindergarten. In 1961, after a year in hospital and rehab facilities Iain was able to return home to his family. The Kirkwoods moved to Winnipeg in 1970 in hope of finding greater resources for their disabled son in the larger community. Iain attended King George Elementary School in Brandon and Hedges Junior High and St. James Collegiate in Winnipeg.
Iain lived on Aldine St. in St. James until the late 1990s when he moved to an independent living apartment at the Luther Home. In 2001 Iain moved to Deer Lodge Centre where he resided until the time of his passing.
Iain had a lifelong love of country music, corny jokes, and 1960s sitcoms. He was always ready for a game of scrabble or cribbage. He dabbled in woodworking and oil painting. He enjoyed visits from his family; sister Una, brother-in-law Nick and nieces, Jocelyn and Alexandra, and lifelong friend Jody. Iain was predeceased by his father Hugh in 2000 and his mother Dorothy in 2018.
Everywhere Iain went at Deer Lodge Centre he heard "Hi Iain", "Hey Iain", "How are you Iain?". For the last 23 years of his life Deer Lodge was his home. In the summer months he could be found out on the front lawn enjoying the sunshine or a special outing to Sargent Sundae for an ice cream. Iain’s family want to thank all the folks at Deer Lodge who took the time to say hello and make Iain feel part of their community, especially the volunteers at the Ladies Auxiliary Gift Shop and Chad’s. Thank you also to Comforts of Home Companion Brenda for her kindness. A big thank you also to the nursing staff who cared for Iain over the past 23 years and the rehab staff who were always ready for a game of balloon badminton and who kept his power chair in working order.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Deer Lodge Centre Ladies’ Auxiliary.
Private family burial has occurred.
