VIRGINIA (VERNA) THORSTEINSON

(nee BOITSON)

February 5, 1945 - October 28, 2024

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved wife, sister, aunt, and friend, Virginia (Verna) Thorsteinson, who passed away peacefully at St. Boniface Hospital on October 28, 2024 at the age of 79.

Verna was predeceased by her parents, Pauline (Besyk) and Alex Boitson. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband Wayne, brother Ken (Georgina), niece Shelley (Tom), great-nephews Garren (Shauna) and Ryan (Brittany), stepson Glen, as well as countless cousins, friends, and neighbours.

Verna was born in Winnipeg Beach, and lived a life devoted to her family and friends. Prior to her graduation, Verna began working as a clerk in the City of Winnipeg’s Assessment & Taxation department. It was there, where she met her husband of 57 years.

Verna thoroughly enjoyed life and remained dedicated to her work forming lifelong friendships with her coworkers, which transcended long after her retirement. She had an infectious and loving personality, easily making friends wherever she went; from her close-knit cousins, 'the girls' at Shape’s Fitness, to even the nearby McDonalds. A smile, laughter, and some lunch was always on the horizon.

Throughout her life, Verna defined the term caregiver, selflessly attending to the needs of others, always willing to lend a helping hand to ensure everyone was taken care of, no matter the situation. She also had a love for animals and cared for the many critters near her Norwood Flats home.

In her spare time, Verna loved her flower garden, sunroom, and visiting the farm. She was often the resident host for many family gatherings with cherished recipes that will be repeated, but never emulated.

Verna had a special bond with her brother and niece, but nothing brought her more joy than spending time with her great-nephews 'her boys', spoiling them with endless love, kindness, and generosity. At times, this meant going to every event and activity possible, while in later years, not missing a graduation, band concert or significant achievement.

Verna was truly a remarkable person, and she will be deeply missed. Her legacy will be forever remembered through our expressions and interactions of generosity and kindness to all.

Cremation has taken place, and a private family interment will be held at a later date.

A special thank you to the staff at St. Boniface Hospital, St. Boniface Home Care, and Verna’s Norwood Flats neighbours for all their care and support.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Of the many cousins I had, Virginia was one of my favorites. My last recollection of her was giving her rides to her work as at the time I was working at the Eaton's downtown store. I don't remember how or when the rides stopped. - Posted by: Borden korolyk (Cousin) on: Nov 03, 2024

  • Kerry and I were very fortunate to have Verna and Wayne as next door neighbours for almost 40 years. For many decades Verna’s car was usually gone early in the morning as she headed off to exercise class and visit her elderly mother. In the afternoons she socialized with friends and neighours in her beloved gazebo and fed all kinds of stray animals. She was so apologetic whenever she needed the slightest assistance, but was always happy to be helpful. We are heartbroken that her final years were so difficult. - Posted by: Mary & Kerry O'Shaughnessy (neighbour) on: Nov 03, 2024

  • I worked with Verna and Wayne from 1973 until they retired' I always enjoyed their company. My condolences. - Posted by: Blaine MacKinnon (Friend) on: Nov 02, 2024
