MARJORIE ANNA RANKIN

(nee THOMSON)

1928 - 2024

Marjorie passed away quietly Sunday morning, October 20, 2024, in the Health Sciences Centre, Winnipeg, MB.

Dib or Dibby (as she was known from a young age) was born in Winnipeg to George and Marguerite Thomson on June 16, 1928, and graduated from Kelvin High School. Dib married Jack Irving in 1947 and then moved to Victoria, BC in 1949 to join her parents in the family business.

After her first marriage ended, Dib married John (Jack) Rankin and moved to Sidney, BC. After his death in the early 1980s, Dib decided to move back to Winnipeg. She lived in Winnipeg until 2005, then moved to Arborg until her death.

Marjorie was predeceased by her parents, her brother George, and both husbands, John and Jack. She is survived by her daughter Leslie Smith, her son Doug Irving, her grandchildren, Denise, David and Andrew, her great-grandchildren, Crystal, Stephen, Kelly, Alexis, Ciara and Declan, and her great-great-grandchildren, Jada and Emerald. She is also survived by her niece Katherine and nephews, Angus, Douglas and Bruce.

During her times in Winnipeg and Victoria she was an active member of the Eastern Star and The Daughters of the Nile. While in Winnipeg, she began breeding Shih Tzus, and continued until just a few years ago. Many people around the Winnipeg area have had the opportunity to own one of Marjorie’s bred puppies.

Marjorie had distinct beliefs which shaped how she lived her life and created her unique personality. All of us will remember her psychic and healing capabilities, her ability to create calmness in others, her ability to adapt to any situation no matter if she was meeting the Queen or just talking to her neighbours, as well as having a really bent sense of humour. We will all miss these aspects of “mom” or “grandma”.

Cremation has already taken place but a celebration of Marjorie’s life will take place at a Memorial Tea for family and friends 2:00 p.m. on Friday, November 8,, 2024, at Thomson Funeral Home, 669 Broadway, a business which was started by Marjorie’s grandfather in 1879. Interment of her ashes will be in Victoria, BC in the late spring. Donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
