Professor Elliott Levine passed away peacefully while holding his granddaughter’s hand, November 1, 2024.
Predeceased by his beloved wife Zelda (nee Rosenthal) and his son-in-law Dominique Thifault.
Elliott was the proud father of Elan Swatek (David), Alissa Levine, and Marly Tcherni (Len Frass). His grandchildren, Rachel Tsang (Adrian), Max Swatek (Grace Li), Julia Thifault, Alexis Levine, Avram Tcherni, and Anna Tcherni brought him tremendous joy.
The only child of Max and Martha Levine, Elliott was born on June 20, 1935, and grew up spending his winters in Toronto and his summers at cottages with his cousins, B’nai Brith Camp with his mother, or a prospecting camp with his father.
He dabbled in several faculties in university before deciding to focus on Philosophy.
Elliott took what was originally thought to be a short-term position at the University of Winnipeg in the mid-1960s. Zelda and Elliott fell in love with Winnipeg and their home on the Red River where they chose to spend the rest of their lives.
Elliott was a founding member and past president of Temple Shalom and active with synagogue and social action causes, especially the Winnipeg Committee for Ethiopian Jews.
The family thanks the thoughtful and caring staff from the Simkin Centre who supported Elliott during the last few weeks of his life.
A funeral service was held at Temple Shalom with burial following at Beit Chaim Mikdash Shalom, Rabbi Allan Finkel officiating.
