WALTER SEREDA
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our father, Walter Sereda, on November 4, 2024, at the age of 96. He was married to our mother, Joyce, for 59 years until her passing.
Left to cherish his memory are his three daughters, Leesa Sereda, Monica Halbesma (Don), and Brenda Laurencelle (Rick); grandchildren, Jennifer and Matthew (Jenel); and great-grandchildren, Julia and Phoebe; sister-in-law Louise, brother-in-law Tom, and many nieces and nephews.
Greeting Walter on the "other side" are his wife Joyce, his parents, Michael and Mary Sereda; his siblings, Alex, Anne Riffko, Kay Struk, Eva, Steffie Runzer, and Stephen; Joyce's siblings; and the many good friends, neighbours, and co-workers that have gone before him.
Walter lived his entire life in the East Kildonan-Elmwood area of Winnipeg. He attended East Kildonan Collegiate and was very active in sports, which earned him his nickname, "Coachy." He was also a lifelong member of the Holy Eucharist Ukrainian Catholic Church. Walter even watched the livestream Sunday service once he became physically unable to attend church in person. Walter and Joyce also enjoyed weekly bowling with the church's bowling league at Rossmere Lanes on Thursday nights.
Walter had a long career of over 35 years with CNR (Canadian National Railway) in the accounting department as a computer supervisor. He enjoyed an even longer retirement. In his retirement years, he took pride in building a family cottage in Grand Marais with his wife. They took pleasure in the time spent and the friendships they made there. He took up woodworking at Kildonan East Collegiate and made furniture for the cottage. He excelled in gardening and loved to share his harvest of cucumbers and tomatoes with family, friends, and neighbours. Walter also enjoyed early morning swimming at Elmwood Kildonan Pool on Concordia and cherished the friendships he made there. He was also a devoted Winnipeg Blue Bomber and Winnipeg Jets fan - he would never miss a game!
Cremation has taken place, and a private family celebration of his life is planned.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Sorry for your loss Leesa, Monica & Brenda. Your dad was a very close family friend. He was my mother’s high school graduation date; Dorothy Diaczun, and stayed close friends until her passing. Also life long friend to my Uncle Stanley. I remember your dad as alway smiling and he seemed like such a gentle soul. - Posted by: Beverly Burton-Guindon (Diaczun) (Family Friend) on: Nov 16, 2024
