It is with incredibly heavy hearts that Andy, Bill and Heather announce the peaceful passing our amazing Mom, Joan Ann Morton (nee Baldwin) on November 12, 2024 at the age of 90. Mom is survived by her three children, Rachel, Lenn and her one and only grandchild Nicholas.
Mom was born September 25, 1934 and the only adopted child of Frank and Maude Baldwin.
It is very difficult to sum up in a few short paragraphs who Joan Ann (Mom) was to her family and all her friends but we will try. Mom was the only adopted child of Frank and Maude Baldwin. During her younger years Mom took up figure skating and excelled at the sport. She skated out of the Winnipeg Winter Club and as a solo and partner skater she won many competitions and awards. When she decided to give up the competition of skating, she then moved to coaching and judging. It is in the judging arena that Mom moved up to the top levels Nationally. She was also asked to go International with her expertise but declined to stay closer to home with family. Mom’s depth of knowledge and enthusiasm for the sport was infectious that even Dad became a fan!
Anything Mom tried she did it to the best of her abilities and usually at an extremely high level. At the young age of 60 she took up tap dancing and performed with dance troupes such as the “Super Troopers, Dancing Grannies, Rachel’s Rockets” and others.
Mom never stood on ceremony nor cared what your station in life was, if you were kind hearted, generous, humble and loving, you were in her huge circle of friends. Always there with a helping heart and hand, she would never allow anyone or anything to struggle if there was a way she could help. Mom taught her family humility, kindness along with laughter, love of sports and the arts.
With school, Mom was always as the top of her class, academically along with sports. It was at Kelvin High School that Mom met Dad. During this time a love blossomed and they would marry in 1958. In 1961 Mom and Dad bought their first house, 19 Henday Bay, where they lived for over 60 years. It was living on Henday Bay, a new development in Winnipeg, that so many young families came together and became a community which Mom was a key integral part of.
Mom championed her children in anything they tried or wanted to try. Resiliency, strength and never give up attitude are some of the greatest traits that Mom exemplified and passed on to her family.
Love of all creatures great and small blossomed into many years of volunteering for many organizations. Her greatest love was volunteering with the Humane Society where she made the animals feel loved.
Our Mom is our inspiration and we will miss her energy, infectious laughter and smile.

Skating in Selkirk, MB under Joan Baldwin was great, as a single woman she took the bus from Wpg every Saturday, there and back. - Posted by: Trudy. Sears friend (Friend ) on: Nov 25, 2024

For many years, I swam beside Joan in the early morning hours at the Centennial Pool. Joan kept us all in giggles with her "stories" and shared so much of herself with us. She was a delightful, supportive, warm and loving person. My condolences to her family. I have many beautiful memories of her. May she rest in peace now. - Posted by: Lynn Beckman (Friend) on: Nov 24, 2024

I was deeply saddened to read of Joan's passing. I met Joan through figure skating. My son was a competitive skater and Joan judged many of Cory's tests and competitions over the years. She always had positive feedback for the skaters. That positivity and her bright smile are the things that I will always remember. Joan was generously supportive of not only the skaters, but also their parents. The world was a better place because Joan brought a special kindness, love and laughter to it. My most sincere condolences to her family at this difficult time. ...one more angel in heaven... - Posted by: Val Bishop (Friend (& mom of a competitive skater)) on: Nov 23, 2024
