IRENE HOLMES

(nee PIDLUBNY)

Our hearts are broken to share that Irene Holmes (nee Pidlubny) passed away at the Calvary Place Personal Care Home on Erin Street just before dawn on September 25, 2024.

Irene was born on January 25, 1931, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the eldest daughter of Nicholas and Eileen Pidlubny (nee Kostick) and sister to Marian (Sutherland). The family lived on Prince Rupert Avenue.

Irene met the love of her life, Robert Richard (Dick) Holmes, while they both were working at Congdon-Marsh Ltd. Irene and Dick married in 1954 and travelled by train to Chicago for their honeymoon, checking out the city and visiting jazz clubs, seeing all the big bands of the day. In 1959, their daughter Elaine was born, and they expanded their family again with son, Robert, in 1961. Their family was complete when twins Allison and Michael arrived in 1969.

Irene loved her community and participated in it in many ways. She held quite a few jobs over the years, including at AP Green, All-Canada Radio and Television, and Canadian Tire. Irene was a longtime member of St. Saviour’s Church on Munroe Avenue, including working with the Anglican Church Women’s Group (ACW) there for many years. She played flute in the Kildonan East Community Band/Northwinds Community Concert Band. After Dick passed away suddenly in 2003, Irene joined the Good Neighbours Seniors Centre where the camaraderie made her feel welcome. She remained in the family home on Government Avenue for many years, moving to Concordia Village in 2018.

Irene is survived by her sister Marian Sutherland, son Robert (Jen), daughter Allison Harder (Berni), son Michael (Melodie), and Barb Holmes. Grandma will be dearly missed by her grandchildren: Elaine’s Valerie Smith (Matt); Rob and Barb’s Amanda Holmes; Allison’s Camryn Desautels (Eli), and Michael’s Maya Holmes; and by great-granddaughters, Valerie’s Hope Pshebnicki and Danielle Smith. She is also remembered by extended family, cousins and family friends.

Irene was predeceased by parents Nicholas Pidlubny (1963) and Eileen Pidlubny (1999), her husband Robert Richard (Dick) Holmes (2003), and their daughter Elaine Carolyn Holmes (2010).

The Holmes and Harder families are immensely thankful to the excellent, dedicated, and very hard-working care team at Calvary Place, who provided Irene with what she needed on her final travels.

Cremation has occurred, and a Celebration of Life will be held at Friends Funeral Service, 2146 Main St., Winnipeg, MB R2V 3S5, on Saturday, December 7, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. A private family interment will follow. The service will be livestreamed at https://fweb.tv/160551

Instead of flowers, the family welcomes donations in Irene’s name to the Winnipeg Humane Society or Diabetes Canada.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • My husband Arne and I send our sincerest condolences on Irene's passing. I was born much later than both Irene and Marion but they were the two cousins I knew best. We never got to see them often as my husband and I moved to British Columbia in 1969. Irene was such a loving, caring person and I'm so thankful to have had her as my cousin. Sincerely, Arne and Barb - Posted by: Barb Mykle (Cousin) on: Dec 04, 2024
