WENDY MARGARET GASCOIGNE

October 29, 1944 -

November 18, 2024

Wendy passed away peacefully on November 18, 2024, in Winnipeg, at the age of 80.

Wendy was predeceased by her parents, Addie and Norman Vestdal, and will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Rodger, her children, Jacqueline and David, along with Richard, Tracy and Trevor, Georgia and Leo, Alicia and Reese.

Addie and Norman met in London, England, and were married in 1943. Wendy was born amidst the devastation from the bombs which had fallen upon Brighton, they came home to Winnipeg at war’s end. She attended Weston School, where she met her lifelong friend, Mavis. After her first marriage, Wendy raised her children while volunteering her time and fundraising for charities, then plying her trade as a hairstylist for almost 40 years.

Wendy was an avid reader, a wonderful listener, and developed keen storytelling abilities conversing with clients who had the pleasure of sitting in her chair. Wendy also worked with Welcome Wagon, and in this capacity, along with some car trouble, she met Rodger. They were married in 1994, with the ceremony taking place at her good friend Jackie’s home.

Wendy became close with Rodger’s mother, Helen, and they shared much time together before her passing in 2010.

Jackie, Chris, Sherry, Shannon, Mavis, Janelle, Lisa, Carol, Mary, Manya, and Susan were frequently in Wendy’s thoughts as she recounted all the interesting things her friends and their families had accomplished.

Fiercely loyal, with a kind soul, and a sweetheart, Wendy will be missed.

Cremation has taken place. A private memorial will occur on December 1, 2024.

Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations to the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation would be appreciated.

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • Rodger and family… I worked with Wendy many many years ago at Singleton‘s, we never saw each other again after we both went our separate ways, but we always kept in touch at Christmas with a card and a note. Because of the postal strike, I tried texting her, and of course, didn’t hear back, and when I found her obituary, I was shocked and saddened. I am so sorry for your loss, I remember Wendy as a beautiful soul with a raucous laugh! And so much hair! I was envious of her curls! I enjoyed our little notes over the years, catching up and wish we had got together to chat in person, I fear we wouldn’t have stopped talking! Isn’t that the way, life goes so fast. She is the only one from those years so long ago that I kept up with from work, I will miss those little updates every year. May your memories of Wendy give you comfort, I’m so sorry. • Wendy was a member of Alpha and Xi Alpha Chapters for many years. While in sorority, she was always ready to take on an Executive position or be on a committee. Her sorority sisters have many great memories of her at events and the parties we held. Outside of sorority, Wendy trained to be a hairdresser. She kept us laughing about many of her experiences while training. As well as knowing Wendy through sorority we often got together with friends for dinner and a game or two of cards. Wendy like to be scorekeeper and kept a sharp eye on plays so everyone followed the rules. We are missing her- her smile and laughter. On behalf of the members of Xi Alpha Chapter, I am sending our condolences to Rodger and family. - Posted by: Val Conley (Friend and President Xi Alpha ) on: Dec 21, 2024

  • Although I wasn't alble to say goodbye, I will miss you. Even though we had not spoke for a long time, we missed saying goodbye, I know we loved each other, sometimes families stray and that it's hard on everyone, Wendy was my Family, My Mother, and I wish we could have shared time together before she left, to tell her things that had happened in my life, to sit and talk. She was always willing to listen, giving me her advise, sharing her thoughts and her love when we would talk. I will miss being able to have that with her. • Wendy was a very special lady offering her advise on my grand-daughter hair predicament with Vaseline. She always was smiling and a great story teller. Sadly missed in our sorority Chapter. Rest in peace Wendy. - Posted by: Mary Normandeau (friend) on: Nov 30, 2024
