DOROTHY HOOD GOWANLOCK

Our family wishes to sadly announce the passing of our wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Dorothy on November 23, 2024 at the age of 95.

Dorothy was predeceased by her parents, Walter and Norma Fitch, her sisters, Joyce (Joe Wrobel), Lois (Tiny Mitzel) and brother Bud (Joan Fitch).

Left to mourn her passing are her husband of 72 years, Donald and daughters, Sue Heather (Bruce Swail), Catherine Anne (Jeff Winter), Laurie Louise and Jill Jennifer (Al Dyck), nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Dorothy grew up in Windsor, Ontario, met her husband in high school, married in 1952, before moving to Toronto, Winnipeg, Edmonton and back to Winnipeg. She received her Teaching Certificate at London Normal School before teaching in Windsor and Scarborough. After moving back to Winnipeg and while raising her family, she earned her BA from University of Winnipeg and her Bachelor of Education from the University of Manitoba. She taught at Sir Sam Steele, John M. King and Clifton Elementary schools retiring from the latter in 1986.

Mom enjoyed life to the fullest, from extensive travels to family gatherings, gardening, golfing and reading. She appreciated the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Manitoba Theatre Centre, Warehouse Theatre, her beloved Fringe Festival and the Art Gallery. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Westview Dance Club and Assiniboine Golf Club.

Although her last few years were difficult, Mom's dementia contained sadness and loss, but also joy. Her good nature shone through and she had a smile that would light up when you approached her. Her best piece of advice was to "do your best in all you do".

The care, dignity and kindness the entire staff at Golden West Personal Care Home extended to Mom (and her family) over the last three months along with the staff at St. Norbert Personal Care Home over the summer was exceptional. We are so grateful for the work you do and the compassion in which you provide it.

The family will hold a private gathering to celebrate Dorothy’s life and memories.

  • Our condolences on the passing of your Loved One, whom I was lucky enough to have met at Sir Sam Steele, 50 years ago, & who also presented me with a lovely musical mobile, just before I went on mat leave to have our daughter. I wished I could have gotten to know Dorothy better, both having had ties with southern ON. I taught in Sarnia, & Kingston while my husband was on staff at RMC. We, too, returned to Winnipeg. However, in 1984 we moved to Quebec City to teach & raise our 2 children. May you be comforted by your own treasured memories of this great lady, blessed by longevity; & by knowing others care. • My sympathies are with you and your family, Cathy. My memories of those wonderful Lincoln days are important to me as I’m sure are the wonderful memories you have of your Mom. Take care. Lorne - Posted by: Lorne Lisik (Former teacher) on: Dec 01, 2024

  • Mrs. Gowanlock was my grade 4 teacher at Clifton School. My friends and I have fond memories of her teaching us phonics, multiplication clocks and the Charleston dance. She held us to a high standard in terms of manners and work ethic but was also very fun. May she rest in eternal peace. - Posted by: Melanie (Former student Clifton School ) on: Dec 01, 2024
