ERMINIA NOCITA

(née RANIERI)

Peacefully, on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, surrounded by her family, Erminia Nocita passed away at the age of 86.

Left to cherish her memory are her sons, Ted (Dina), Joe, Tony, and Sam (Loretta); her grandchildren, Sarah (Max), Emily (Marc), Adam (Alaina), Giordana, Teo, and Eliana; her great-grandchild Brady; her sister Angela (Andrea); and numerous nieces and nephews in Italy, Argentina and Canada. Erminia was predeceased by her loving husband Domenico (2004).

Born on April 12, 1938, in Satriano, Catanzaro, Italy, Erminia immigrated to Canada with her husband Domenico, in 1962. They left behind their parents and siblings in search of a better life for their soon-to-be-born twins. Little did they know that they would soon welcome yet another set of twins just 10 ½ months after the first.

It is hard to imagine how Mom managed to raise four baby boys in a new country, without knowing anyone or speaking the language, all while Dad worked to support the family. Her strength and caring nature were evident in every sacrifice she made for her loved ones. Family was always her top priority, and her genuine love and concern for her children, grandchildren, and in-laws were always on display. She generously shared her “old school” advice on every occasion, right up until her final days.

Truly the glue that held her family together, Mom expressed her love primarily through her passion for cooking. She had a remarkable talent for creating something delicious out of even the most basic ingredients, and a magical touch that made leftovers taste even better the next day. Many times, when unannounced friends dropped by, she would whip up an exquisite meal within 30 minutes. Her Sunday family lunches were special occasions where everyone gathered to enjoy her amazing cooking and share the latest news. Mom's legendary Christmas Eve dinners were the highlight of the year, leaving all invited friends raving about them for many years afterward.

Mom had an incredible love for music. She enjoyed singing, strumming her guitar, and entertaining, especially in her later years. One memorable Christmas at the Convalescent Home, where she spent her last few years, she captivated everyone when she outperformed the entertainer during a rendition of "O Holy Night."

Mom’s practical nature often led her to sew her own summer dresses, sweaters, and other garments instead of buying them, and she had a unique ability to breathe new life into seemingly worn-out clothes. This skill was invaluable while raising her four growing boys.

Despite living in a rural area with limited access to the city, Mom taught herself English, fueled by her love for soap operas and cooking shows. She was a true self-starter, dedicating 30 minutes each day to participate in her favourite TV exercise shows, never missing a class for over 30 years.

Mom demonstrated great strength through her deep faith. She prayed constantly for every member of her family, confident that God was in control, often stating, “come vuole Dio” (as God wills). Mom knew that when the time came, she would be reunited in Heaven with Dad and other family members who predeceased her.

The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the nurses and staff of the Convalescent Home of Winnipeg, as well as her wonderful companions, Halyna, Iryna, and Natalia, for their loving care. A special thank you also goes to Wilma Anania, Erminia’s best friend, and the Anania Family, who truly became part of our family through their friendship and support for mom in her last few years.

Mom, you lived a remarkable life. Your sacrifices for our family will never be forgotten. Rest in comfort, knowing that your children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren will cherish and love you forever.

The family appreciates the many messages and condolences that have been received from friends and family. To respect Erminia’s wishes, a private family service has been held, followed by interment at Waverley Memorial Gardens, 1501 Waverley St. Pallbearers were her sons, Ted, Joe, Tony and Sam and nephews, Terry and Tony Ferraro.
