MARY CAPRI

On December 3, 2024, I, Mary Capri passed away to be with God, united with my mom Cecile, my dad Dominik and Ron.

I loved helping in the church, visiting the sick with Communion and to be with those who needed someone to visit, listen and talk to. My church and my family, Mom, Dad, my favorite #1 sister, Tannena, and my favorite #1 brother-in-law, Jim were very important to me. I tried to follow what I was taught - to do unto others as you would do unto me.

I loved teaching young children, Nursery, Kindergarten, grades one to three and Special Education. What joy I would get to see their faces and surprise when they said, you’re right Miss Capri, I can read it and I can do it. Even after I retired, I met many parents and students, who thanked me for helping them. I taught for 34 and a half years in the inner-city area.

I leave behind my favorite #1 sister, Tannena and my favorite #1 brother-in-law, Jim, also my cousins, friends and many special friends, Janet (like a sister), Marilyn V, Iona, Debbie, Paul, Connie, Rachael, Elizabeth, Bonnie, Sandra, and Linda C, Theresa and Mary-Anne. Remember I love you, to my special angels in my life.

Thank you so much, you don’t know what that meant to me. I will see you all again, God Bless all.

Mary struggled with a lot of health problems, but she managed to live with them, but this cancer was the worst. She stayed strong and lived one day at a time. She had her faith.

Mary faced a lot of negative people throughout her life. She was told she would not be a teacher if she did not loose weight. She fooled them all and became the best teacher ever. To this day she is still friends with a number of teachers, students and parents. Mary also had maintained friendships with people she went to Hugh John McDonald and Daniel McIntyre School. Even in the hospital, when asked she was giving advice and spoke with the staff.

Mary was the kind of person who listened, really listened to people. She also was generous to a fault if someone needed financial help, she gave from her heart and asked nothing in return.

Mary enjoyed watching wrestling, casino, talking with friends and family on the phone, doing lunch and listening to Elvis Presley sing.

Mary was a teacher until her last day. She passed away December 3rd, which is "123", as she taught her grade school children. Mary you will be missed by everyone who had the pleasure to know you and call you their friend. I will miss you most, you were the best sister anyone could have.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, December 11, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John XXIII Roman Catholic Church, 3390 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, MB with Reverend Fr. Robert Polz officiating.

Thank you to everyone who said a prayer, visited, had masses said, sent flowers and spoke with Mary while she was in the hospital. Also, a big thank you to Dr. Ritchie and Erica at the St. James Clinic, Dr. Hu and the 5 South staff at the Grace Hospital.

Mary, I love you to the moon and back. You are no longer suffering. Rest in Peace.

Your forever loving sister, Tannena

and your brother-in-law, Jim

Condolences & Memories (24 entries)

  • Mary was a very unique person. Although I never had the privilege of working in the same school, I knew her from my involvement in teacher support. Her sense of humour was keen, as was her love of teaching. Although Mary was experienced as an early years teacher, she maintained a sense of wonder about the unique gifts of each student. I recall her sincere humility when considering the achievement of her students. The world is a poorer place without her. May she rest in peace. - Posted by: Donald Teel (Former colleague ) on: Dec 29, 2024

  • Miss Capri was my grade 1 teacher. I am almost 40 now and still can recall this woman’s kindness, patience and sweetness. Miss Capri was my favorite teacher and always encouraged my talents and loved her students like family. I’m so sad to hear of her passing, may she rest in peace. - Posted by: Amy (Student) on: Dec 23, 2024

  • I am saddened to hear of Miss Capri's passing . I met Mary when she was teaching at Luxton School. She taught all of my children as they grew up. My children loved her and so did I. I had the great opportunity to work with her as I was a TA with Winnipeg school div. 1. She had a huge heart and was so kind and funny. She loved children and it showed when she spoke with them, with kindness as true caring. Just a beautful lady. She will be missed. Thankyou Mary for being you! - Posted by: Barbara Tanner (Knew Mary when she taught my children at Luxton School) on: Dec 17, 2024

  • I am so very sorry to hear about Mary's passing. I remember going to Grand Beach all of us together. Mary had very long hair which I was able to braid. Many good memories. God has another super good angel. Dorothy. - Posted by: Dorothy DeMarsh (cousin) on: Dec 16, 2024

  • Ms Capri was my grade one teacher (1985-1986) She taught me soooo much! She was patient, caring, and I get so many compliments for my cursive handwriting and it’s all thanks to her! Later on in life she came to my wedding shower and baby showers and what did she give my babies as a shower gift-a book of course! I will cherish the little hand written messages in them always. Thank you for being such a great teacher. May you rest in peace. - Posted by: Roxanne Vasas (Kozminski) (Former student) on: Dec 14, 2024

  • I have known Mary for many years. She was a teacher at Tyndall Park School where I was an EA. Mary was also my daughter’s teacher so we became quick friends, a friendship that has lasted all these years. We used to get together once or twice a year for lunch or dinner. We’d sit and talk, laugh and reminisce. She was a kind and gentle soul whom I had the honour and privilege to have know. Rest now my friend. - Posted by: Teresa phillips (Friend) on: Dec 11, 2024

  • Our family knew the Capri family from many years ago. Although we have not kept in touch with them, on occasion we would run into Mary & Tannena, and both always asked about all of our family. It was always so wonderful to see them and catch up. We all have very fond memories of them and are so sorry to hear about Mary's struggles. Tannena, may it give you some comfort to know that Mary is not suffering anymore, even though you have lost a part of yourself. Deepest condolences from our family to you and Jim. - Posted by: Cheryl McNeilly (Family Friend) on: Dec 10, 2024

  • Mary was a gift to all of us at HRC...kind, thoughtful and sweet...always a welcome to my dear mom and me when mom was alive and attending...front pew and a comfort seeing her in her spot...an angel indeed. She is missed. - Posted by: Louise Lemoine (Fellow parishioner at HRC) on: Dec 10, 2024

  • Mary was like family to us. She was our neighbor when we were still living in the apartment. She would often knock on our door, bring treats for my kids, ask how they were doing, and even take the time to read their report cards. She was always happy and proud of their achievements. Every time I cooked "pansit", I would bring some to her, and I could see the sweet smile on her face. I feel so blessed to have known her. I was able to talk to her on the phone and greet her on her birthday while she was in the hospital. Mary will always be deeply missed and lovingly remembered. - Posted by: Mary Ann (Friend) on: Dec 09, 2024

  • Miss Capri was my Grade 1 teacher a long time ago at John M. King. I loved school and still remember the feeling of pride when she’d award me those red cinnamon hearts for being first settled in my desk, hands folded! Today, I am a teacher — thanks for all your years of service in the classroom, Miss Capri - Posted by: Kristine D. (Former student) on: Dec 07, 2024

  • Dear Tannena & Jim, I'm sorry to hear of Mary's passing. She sounds like a lovely gal, lucky you to have her as a sister & best friend..... She's at peace, may you enjoy peace in time too. Hugggs, Alice Hogue 💜 - Posted by: Alice Hogue (Friend of Tannena ) on: Dec 07, 2024

  • Mary's apartment was just down the hall from us. Whenever our grandsons came for a visit they would insist on stopping at Mary's door to say hi before tearing off down the hall. Of course Mary didn't approve of running in the halls, but she never complained about it. She always had a smile and sometimes a treat. As the years went by Mary had her problems, I remember that terrible infection she got from her knee surgery. But she still managed to get to the door, pulling her IV pole behind her. We have many memories of Mary, as she was our neighbour for many years. We know that Mary is now with the Lord, and we pray that Tanina and Jim will be comforted by that. - Posted by: Sheila Daly (Former neighbour) on: Dec 07, 2024

  • Mary always appeared when she heard the patter of our grandchildren's feet in the hall. Her face would reflect the joy she had in dealing with Nicholas or Zachery. Hers was a life of service to others. Mary is at peace. May God grant you peace as well Tannina. - Posted by: Richard Daly (Former neighbour) on: Dec 07, 2024

  • When I bought my first home Mary generously offered to help set my kitchen up. We spent a memorable day together. She was a sweet soul. - Posted by: Pat (Teaching friend ) on: Dec 07, 2024

  • Mary was so kind to me at Daniel Mac, I appreciated her friendship - Posted by: Andrea wright (Friend) on: Dec 07, 2024
