JOSEPH (JOE) MARQUETTE
It is with profound sadness, we announce the sudden and unexpected passing of our dear dad at the Grace Hospital ICU on Sunday, December 8, 2024, with us by his side. He was 85 years young.
This Christmas, Dad will reunite with our Mom, his wife of 61 years, Joyce, who passed away in March 2023. Left to cherish his memory; daughter Lori; sons Daryl (Alanna), Randy (Suzanne); grandson Austin (Payton) and their extended families; brother Alex (Rolande) of Winnipeg; sisters Mary (Frank) of Alberta and Yvonne of Winnipeg; sister-in-law Betty of Winnipeg, as well as their extended families. He was “Uncle Joe” to his many nieces and nephews, who held him in the highest regard. He will be deeply missed by his golf companions and longtime friends Gordie Chan, Harve (Dorothy) Koch, and sons Darryl and Colin. Off-season, they regularly met at A&W for breakfast on Sundays. Dad was preparing to have breakfast with his friends on the day of his passing. He will always be remembered as “Grampa Joe” to Tracey, Ricky (Mattea, Alex, Abel), Tyler (Angela), and Macara. Dad was predeceased by Mom, his parents, his brother Gus, and brothers-in-law Herman and Gerald (Kay and Chad).
Dad was born in Woodridge (Sandilands), Manitoba. As a child, he attended Lafortune Catholic School and served as an altar boy on Sundays. At age 18, alongside his brother Gus, Dad traveled to Winnipeg to work at Brooke Bond Tea Company. They were committed to providing for their family. Living in Winnipeg during the week and commuting to the country on weekends, Dad enjoyed his passion for baseball. He played for the Vita Mallards, who won the Southeast Border League Championship in 1961.
It was during that time he met Mom, his lifelong love. They married in 1962 and started a family immediately. In the early 60's, Dad began his career in Recreational Vehicle sales. We always had the use of a camper, trailer, or motorhome for family vacations, creating many cherished memories. In the late 70's Dad and Mom took an enormous risk, resigning from their places of employment to begin their journey of self-employment as listing agents of pre-owned Manufactured Housing. Dad’s entrepreneurial mindset, extremely strong work ethic, integrity, and honesty paved the way for his greatest accomplishment: our family business. Marquette Homes in Headingley ran successfully for 37 years until retirement in 2017.
Dad and Mom looked forward to spending winters in Florida for many years. That is where Dad’s passion for golf began and stayed with him for life. After retirement, he always kept busy - working on projects, golfing, outings, and visiting family, (most recently with his siblings on December 5th, a memory they will treasure). Life without Mom was difficult after her passing twenty-one months ago. Dad managed to live actively, independently, and on his terms in the home he had shared with Mom for over 45 years - our family home.
Dad was a kind, generous, highly principled, and proud man with a great sense of humor and a talent for practical jokes. His immense strength, love, and laughter will stay with us forever.
In accordance with Dad’s wishes, cremation has taken place, with a private family interment to follow. A celebration of Dad’s life will take place at a later date.
We wish to express our gratitude for the quick response of Fire and Paramedics, Dad’s neighbor Dennis, as well as the doctors, nurses, and staff at the Grace Hospital ICU for the comfort, care, and support they provided to us during a very traumatic day.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to The Grace Hospital Foundation.
