SUPERINTENDENT GORDON V. WOHLSCHLAGER (RETIRED)

March 4, 1935 - December 15, 2024

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Gordon V. Wohlschlager on December 15th, in the cherished home where he spent 83 of his 89 years, in East St. Paul. Gordon leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion, including his beloved wife and best friend of 65 years, Muriel. Together, they created a beautiful family that includes daughters Vivian (Brian) Ross and Linda (Brett) Baines, as well as grandchildren Nicole (Brian) Jaskow, Daniel Ross (Kelsey), Serena Baines, and James Baines. His newest joy, great-granddaughter baby Ayla-Rae Jaskow, brought light into his life in ways that words cannot express. As well as many nieces, nephews and extended family.

Gordon was not only a devoted husband and loving father, but also a grandfather and great-grandfather whose warmth and kindness touched everyone he met. His 37-year career as a dedicated police officer began at the tender age of 17 in East Kildonan, culminating in his retirement as Superintendent in Division 11, District 1. He served his community with unwavering commitment and integrity, embodying the spirit of public service. Throughout his distinguished career, Gordon received numerous awards and accolades, including the Queen's Jubilee Medal, recognizing his outstanding contributions to law enforcement and community service.

Beyond his career, Gordon found joy in many pursuits. He was a skilled woodworker, crafting treasured gifts for family and friends. His spirit of adventure led him to camping and traveling, with countless cherished summers spent at Betula Lake. In 1991, he proudly purchased a family cottage. Dad could often be found teaching his daughters and friends how to water ski, affectionately calling them his "ski-ducks", and some went on to become Betula Lake Ski-bees. Gordon was a familiar face at every lake festivity—whether it was baseball games, pancake breakfasts, or corn roasts—his presence was a source of joy and camaraderie. His leadership as president of the Betula Lake Association reflected his dedication to community and friendship.

Gordon also poured his heart into volunteering, donning the costumes of beloved characters like Smokey Bear and A&W Root Bear, but it was as Santa that he truly shone, spreading cheer at schools, seniors' clubs, children's Christmas parties, and nursing homes. He embraced every opportunity to bring smiles to faces of all ages. His love for square and round dancing forged many deep friendships, while his adventures snowmobiling with the Springhill Trailblazers enriched his life with shared laughter and thrill.

A true animal lover, Gordon was never without a furry friend by his side, always with treats tucked in his pockets for any creature in need. His gentle spirit and kindness will be profoundly missed by all who knew him.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Dr. J. Law, Dr. J. Sathananthan, and the compassionate team at St. Boniface Palliative Care, as well as our homecare nurse, Kija, and the dedicated staff of WRH Palliative Home Care, who have been a source of support during this journey. We are also thankful for the unwavering kindness of our neighbors and lifelong friends.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Gordon’s memory may consider making a donation to the Winnipeg Police K-9 Monument, Winnipeg Police Veterans Association, Winnipeg Humane Society, or any charity of your choice.

As we bid farewell to our beloved "Daddy bear," we find solace in knowing he has gone to rest in his cave, forever cherished in our hearts.

As per Gordon’s wishes there will not be a service held at this time.

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • To Muriel and the family, we are so sorry for your loss. We will keep you in our thoughts and prayers. As the daughters of Tony and Pearl Cherniak, we will fondly remember him as Gordie! He was a kind person, and he always made time to come say Hi to us we we saw him. My boys always talk about the emails that Gordie and their Pa Tony would send to each other. My boys would laugh with their grandpa as he shared the emails with them. Every Christmas they do mention one particular email. Tony had sent one email with a voice overplay to Gordie. Tony had mentioned that Pearl was making a traditional Ukrainian Christmas dish called Kutia. Phonetically it is pronounced as Ku-cha. The email voice recording pronounced it as Ku-tee-a. The three of them laughed so hard. So even though my boys have only met Gordie a few times, Gordie still gets talked about at this time of year. Again, sorry for your loss. - Posted by: Judi Cherniak, Barb Olivier, Donna Sutherland (Friends ) on: Dec 24, 2024

  • I was a young constable with the WPS when I first met Gord, he was the big boss in the corner office. Over the years he was my boss several times and his guidance led my career. He supported and approved my transfers requests several times which demonstrated his faith in my ability. While tough, he was fair, he challenged me, kept me on track and made me a successful police officer and future supervisor. He took a shine to me and over the years which made me a better person and police supervisor. I liked Gord! - Posted by: Henry (Co worker) on: Dec 24, 2024

  • My deepest condolences to Muriel and the girls. We had so many good times over the years, being involved with the snowmobile club. The wiener roasts on the trails will never be forgotten. Good memories to cling to. Geordie will always remain in.our hearts. It’s difficult to lose ‘our rock’ but we always have the good memories. God bless. - Posted by: Marilyn Chubey (Friend ) on: Dec 21, 2024
