After a long life of ninety-seven years, just 9 days short of his birthday, Leo Clermont passed away on December 15, 2024.
Born in Brandon, Manitoba on December 24, 1926, he was a Brandonite through and through. Leo’s education started in the Brandon School Division although working life called him early. While still in school, he started delivering groceries on a bicycle for Zink’s store. Not very long after starting work, an opportunity with CPR meant an end to formal education. Leo then moved to the Department of Highways, first with the Department of Engineering followed by a transfer to Road Maintenance.
Interrupting his 14 years with Highways, Leo took a leave to serve in the Canadian Army during World War II. Stationed at Camp Borden, ON, he was trained in the Armoured Corps. Both before enlistment and after, Leo was stationed around Southern Manitoba to Souris, Pipestone, Cartwright, and Manitou. It was while he was in Pipestone that he met his future wife, Beverley Cairns. They married in 1949 and spent their entire marriage in Brandon where they raised their family of four daughters. In 1957, Leo joined the City of Brandon Works Department where he remained until 1992, retiring as Supervisor of Streets and Roads.
Leo was actively involved in the community in a variety of ways. He was a president of the Brandon Tennis Club as well as a member of Sunnyside Golf and Country Club and the Brandon and Riverside Curling Clubs. He served on the Brandon School Board for 20 years, with opportunities to fill the positions of Vice Chair and Chair more than once. He was instrumental in the formation of the Block Parent Program, assisted the Brandon Centennial Committee as Vice-Chair, and was seconded by the Province of Manitoba to co-ordinate the Neighbourhood Improvement Project. Leo always found a way to contribute to make our city better. He will be remembered for his honesty, unwavering integrity, and devotion to his family.
Leo was predeceased by his wife, Beverley; his parents, Alberic and Albertine (Lacoste) Clermont; sisters, Janet (Jack) Chambers and Eva Clermont; brother, Louis Clermont (Dorothy); and niece Connie Lytywn. Leo leaves the gift of many wonderful stories and special memories to his sister, Irene; daughters, Kerry Clermont, Gail (Steve) Holden, Leigh Trotter, and Jody Corriveau, eleven grandchildren, their spouses, and ten great-grandchildren.
A private graveside service was held on December 23, 2024 at Brandon Cemetery.

My deepest condolences to each of Leo’s precious daughters and families. Your Father and I became acquainted many years ago when I, was as an educator in Brandon School Division, and he was a BSD school trustee. He was a wonderful thinker and was instrumental in 1967 having a gymnasium built at George Fitton School when it was constructed without one! His ability to seek opinions resulted in BSD trustees supporting age 55 retirement for teachers! His logic and experiences lead to a creative and stellar citizen! Rest in a well deserved peace, friend Leo. Pat Bowslaugh - Posted by: Pat Bowslaugh (Log time professional connection) on: Dec 29, 2024
