LUCY MIKOLAJCZYK

(nee ORESZKIEWICZ)

January 18,1947 – December 18, 2024

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved wife, mother, sister, sister-in-law, auntie and friend on December 18, 2024, at the age of 77.

Left to cherish her beautiful memories are her husband of 59 years, Edward; sons Shaun (Angela) and Derek; siblings Alec, Teresa, Stanley and many nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members and friends.

Mom was predeceased by her parents Harry Oreszkiewicz and Dora (Germanowicz), brothers Vincent (Margarita) and Ted (Suzette) and nephew Marconi in Brazil and other family members.

Mom was born in Lafaiete, Brazil. She was the youngest of six children. The family moved to Winnipeg when mom was just a baby, settling in the Point Douglas neighborhood. Mom shared many wonderful stories growing up in the north end with her siblings and friends. They all stayed close. Mom went to St. John’s High School and in her late teens, she began working in administration with the Air Force at the Winnipeg Airport. She then went on to work for Health and Welfare Canada, Family Allowance and Old Age Security, initially in the typing pool then as an analyst, where she retired in 1996. Mom enjoyed sharing many funny stories while working with Pat, Bernice, Doug, Joyce and Annie, to name just a few. She maintained regular contact with many of her work friends.

Mom was an amazing cook! We will always remember our favorites, which included her delicious Holupchi’s, Kapusta Soup and Sweet and Sour Spareribs. We tried replicating them many times to no avail – she would reply “it’s almost as good as mine”.

Mom met the love of her life Edward in the early 1960’s and they got married on October 16, 1965. They lived in Winnipeg on Cathedral Ave, then in 1976 moved to Lockport, where they resided for the next 11 years. In 1987, they built their family home in West St Paul.

Over the years Mom traveled throughout the world including Brazil, Australia, Ukraine, Belorussia, Mexico, Arizona and the Dominican Republic. Mom was the happiest when she was cooking, baking and getting together with family and friends. She always insisted on hosting Christmas dinners, despite our multiple offers.

Mom was a generous, considerate, caring, and compassionate person. She will be dearly and forever missed by all of us, and everyone who knew her and was blessed to have her as part of their lives. The memories of mom/Lucy will live in our hearts forever. The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the first responders and the HSC ER staff for their excellent and compassionate care.

At Mom’s wishes cremation has taken place and there will be no formal service. An open house for family and close friends will be held at the Mikolajczyk residence at 15 Sandhill Drive in West St. Paul, MB on January 18, 2025, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.
