ADAM ROMANCHUK

1933 - 2024

Adam Romanchuk (VE4SN), aged 91, of Winnipeg, Manitoba passed away peacefully on December 31, 2024, at Holy Family Nursing Home, Winnipeg. He is now a silent key.

He was born on March 30, 1933, to Bronislaw and Pearl Romanchuk in Winnipeg. Aside from a short stint in Fort William, Ontario, Adam lived his whole life in Winnipeg. Adam was married to Sylvia Nazar, his XYL, on May 10, 1958, and they had three children, Kathy, Dan and Susan.

Adam had a long career working for the Government of Canada as an electronics technician. This career was a logical extension of his hobby and passion - amateur radio. Adam was a renowned Ham Radio operator. He had "worked the world" with 346 entities worked and had established himself locally, nationally and internationally as a leader who was respected for his knowledge, generosity and dedication to the community. Adam was the inaugural president of the Winnipeg Amateur Radio Club (WARC). Adam passed on his love of amateur radio and helped many young Hams get their licences.

Adam was also a lover of astronomy, history, classical music and chess. Any time he had a chance to engage with any of these topics was a joyous one for him. There can be little doubt he has been reunited with his lifelong friend John Kohut and that a chess match is now underway!

In the later years, Adam lived with Alzheimer’s. While this disease robbed him of some of his independence it never took away the sparkle in his eyes, the love of life he possessed, his genuine positivity and gentle nature.

Adam will be lovingly missed by his family; his children, Kathy, Dan (Amy), Susan (Jason) and grandchildren, Jadianne, Robyn, Josh, Jackson and Olivia. Family meant everything to Adam and extended family were part of his immediate family. Adam’s love extended to his niece Carolyn and her family (Ken, Carleigh and Andrea) and his nephew Michael and his family (Audrey, Chris and Jillian). Adam is also survived by his brother Lawrence (Anne) and his son Brian and his family.

Adam loved his grandchildren, and he relished every opportunity to be involved in their lives!

He was preceded in death by his loving wife Sylvia, his parents and his niece Brenda.

The family is eternally grateful for the care provided over the last three and a half years by Holy Family Nursing Home and Dr. Terry Babick. Our family will always be grateful for your kindness, love and dedication.

Prayers will be held at Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church, 965 Boyd Avenue, Winnipeg, at 7:00 p.m. on January 9, 2025. Funeral services will be on January 10, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. at Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church.

Interment will take place at Glen Eden Cemetery, with a reception to follow at Glen Eden.

Pallbearers will be grandchildren, Robyn Drysdale, Josh, Jackson and Olivia Romanchuk, Garrett Graham and Chris Chomiak. Jadianne will be reading at the service.

Memorials or donations may be made in Adam’s name to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba.

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • Adam was a generous and kind man. At first he was ‘Sylvia’s husband’ who lived across the street from the school where Sylvia and I worked. Over time, I got to know him through his initiative to be of service. When I went to Japan in 1992, in the days before computer and cell phones, he offered his ham radio skills as a way to communicate is case of an emergency. When he retired, he volunteered at R. F. Morrison school and started a chess club with the students. When I stayed late at school in the middle of winter and my car wouldn’t start, he came out to provide a jumpstart as CAA would have taken hours to respond. In later years I could often see him on the front porch watching the 3:30 hustle and bustle as children left school for the day. He was always interested in those around him and always willing to help! Вічна йому памʼять! May your good memories of Adam bring you peace and comfort! - Posted by: Diana Borys (Friend) on: Jan 09, 2025

  • I first met Adam when we worked at the Thunder Bay Airport. (The city changed names from Port Arthur and Fort William, the day I arrived there). Later, he was my Station Manager in Kenora Flight Service Station. He was an excellent manager and good man back then. I knew Adam from Amateur Radio ever since our days at Kenora. I always considered him a good friend, and an outstanding ham radio operator. Too bad he never worked that elusive P5 station. 73 Adam Dick Maguire VE4HK - Posted by: Dick Maguire (Friend) on: Jan 04, 2025

  • I only met Adam once when I volunteered for the Manitoba Marathon but spoke with him many times on the radio. I benefited, however, from his years of dedication to the amateur radio community. He was a nice man. My condolences to his family. - Posted by: Scott Miner (Friend) on: Jan 04, 2025
