Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryRICHARD (DICK) JOHN DRESCHER
Peacefully on January 4, 2025, Dick passed away after a courageous battle with cancer at Riverview Health Centre. Dick will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 58 years, Dorothy; children Marnie (Chris), Kim (Len), and James (Melanie); grandchildren, Kian, Justin, Matthew (Emma), Taylor, Amy (Kyle), Mark (Heidi), and Yojo; great-grandchildren Alaya, Jasmine, Easton, and Lewis; brother, Norman; brother-in-law, Jim Podjan; and his loyal “puddy cat”, Lezzie.
Dick was predeceased by an infant brother; his parents, Phyllis and Richard Drescher; mother- and father-in-law, Betty and Ernie Podjan; son-in-law, Allan Rogers; and infant great-grandson, Harrison.
Dick was born on November 30, 1944, in Winnipeg and was raised in his childhood home at 210 Maryland St., where he spent countless hours with his best buddy and lifelong friend, Morley Jensen. Dick met Dorothy, the love of his life, through his cousin Judy McEwen (Honer). They were married in 1966 and built a life together in Rivercrest, where they raised their family and shared 51 wonderful years. Their home in Rivercrest was the heart of family celebrations and special occasions. Later, they embraced a new chapter, and moved to the welcoming community of Middlechurch on the Red.
Dick’s career spanned decades, including 30 years in the Composite Departments at Bristol Aerospace, followed by 10 years at Boeing, retiring in 2009.
Many cherished summers were spent at the family cabin in Laclu, ON, where Dick enjoyed tinkering with different projects, towing the kids behind the boat, family game nights, and the annual Regatta long weekend. Dick had a clever knack for ‘MacGyvering’ solutions to problems using whatever was on hand and could fix almost anything. He was always ready to lend a helping hand to family, friends, and neighbors.
Dick found joy in life’s simplest moments and will be remembered for his strength, patience, kindness, and love. His legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew him. We love you Dad xoxo.
The family wishes to thank the many people who were part Dick’s journey for their compassion and care: Dick’s special homecare nurse, Don, and all the homecare workers; Dr. Zhang at Cancer Care MB; Dr. Borrett and the nursing and support staff at Seven Oaks Hospital on the 5th floor, unit 4; and Dr. Blom and all the staff at Riverview Health Centre on 2 West.
Special thanks to Merle and Dody for their care and support to Dick and Dorothy, and for looking after Lezzie during this difficult time.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Riverview Health Centre (1 Morley Ave, Winnipeg, MB R3L 2P4) or the Winnipeg Humane Society (45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, MB R3T 0R3).
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, January 16, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. in the chapel at Glen Eden Funeral Home, 4477 Main Street, West St. Paul, MB. A gathering of family and friends will follow in the Glen Eden Reception Centre.
