GERALD BAKER

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved father, Gerald Baker. Gerald died unexpectedly at the Grace Hospital on December 30, 2024, at the age of 87.

He was predeceased by his wife Geraldine (nee Maier), his mother Edith, father Charles, sister Zelie Player, brothers, Neil and Frank. Gerald will be sadly missed by his brother Bob and his wife Jacqueline. He will be deeply missed by his three daughters, Joann, Judy (Michael Thomas), Janice (Ron Whyte), seven grandsons, Ryan (Jessica), Sean (Rhiannon), Troy (Stephanie), Christian (Brooke), Taylor (Alanna), Wyatt (Jordan), Reese (Britney) and great-grandchildren, Parker, Hailey, Kennedy, Cole, Dylan, and Ashley; sister-in-law Joan (Richard Kolebaba), brother-in-law Dale Maier, special friend Barb Sloggett, along with countless extended family and friends.

Gerald was born in Vancouver, BC, on November 22, 1937. He grew up in Moose Jaw, SK, marrying the love of his life, Geraldine. They shared 67 wonderful years together. Gerald was a dedicated Canadian Pacific Railway man. His career spanned from February 1, 1955 to December 1, 1992. Opportunities for advancement took him to Calgary, Thunder Bay and Winnipeg. He finished his career as a general car foreman. Although there were many career accomplishments throughout his life, Gerald’s focus was his family. He was very passionate about sports, having played many as a young man. As a father, he volunteered his time with the Fort William Dolphins swim club. He was instrumental in recruiting Don Talbot, an Olympic coach for the Thunder Bay Thunderbolts.

Gerald took great pride in coaching his grandsons’ hockey teams, dedicating his time and expertise to help them develop both their skills and character on the ice. His guidance and encouragement not only shaped their athletic abilities but also fostered a sense of teamwork and sportsmanship that extended beyond the rink. Upon retirement, Gerald embraced a variety of interests. He joined the Winnipeg Senior Citizens (HAM) Radio Club V4EWSC Inc., took voice lessons, and became a member of a band. He also tried his hand, successfully at sewing and baking. Additionally, he was an active member of the ADANAC Club where he discovered a passion for wood carving – a skill in which he excelled and was recognized for his achievements.

Gerald and Geraldine split their time between Arizona in the winter and Winnipeg in the summer. Summers were spent camping with their seven grandsons, where they taught them life skills, a love for the outdoors, and how to master every card game imaginable. With Geraldine by his side, Gerald developed a passion for gardening, and together they shared the fruits of their labour with friends and family.

A special Thank-you to the Seine River staff and the many friends he had made there these past nine months. Although his time was cut short, the love and laughter he shared with everyone here truly filled our dad’s heart and put a smile on his face.

We warmly welcome all family and friends to join us in celebrating Gerald’s life on Saturday, February 15, 2025, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Norberry-Glenlee Community Centre, 26 Molgat Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • In 1977 my family moved to the Fort Richmond community in Winnipeg. At the time I had no idea that the Baker family also moved to Fort Richmond that summer also until I walked into my Social Studies class and saw Judy. From that day our families became dear friends to one another. It was beyond a blessing in our lives. Going to swim meets together, playing cards at the Baker’s dining room table, Chinese on Christmas Eve; the dear fond memories are endless. Mr. & Mrs. Baker’s commitment to their family was beyond heart warming. Our deepest condolences go out to Judy, Janice, Joanne; and all of their families. I can still see your Mom baking and doing crafts, and your Father chatting away on his CB radio. Sending much love to you all, and prayers of healing.
