LINDA GROFF

(nee WRIXON)

February 11, 1939 - January 14, 2025

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Mother and Nana on January 14, 2025, with family by her side.

Linda was born in Winnipeg and raised in Starbuck, Manitoba. She lived on the family farm with her mother, father and brother Benny. Just down the highway were her beloved grandparents, George and Tillie Dunlop.

In Starbuck, she attended school, the Starbuck United Church and went to CGIT camp. She spent her days playing on the farm, hanging out with Smokey her black lab and recalls getting chased by a bull. Her favourite pastime was not playing the piano but playing baseball. She enjoyed the rural life and going to Jacks on Starbuck’s Main Street. She maintained her connection with Starbuck by attending their annual fall suppers.

Her father’s sudden passing when she was 17, forced Mom and her mother to Winnipeg. She attended Angus Business College and later taught evening courses at the school while working her day job at Manitoba Blue Cross.

Mom met Dad at a Starbuck dance which began a new chapter in her life. They were married at St. Stephen’s Broadway United Church on July 11, 1959.

On September 26, 1961, she began “the best job in the world” when David was born. She loved this job so much, she doubled her workload when Derek was born on February 21, 1964. Mom was the general manager of our home and excelled as being a mother to her two boys. Summers were filled with camping trips and winters were filled with watching hockey games on snowbanks at the Silver Heights Community Club. Cutting down the Christmas tree was a special time for all of us. Special memories were a family holiday to Hawaii and enjoying the family pool.

St. James was their home. Mom was involved with the Bruce Avenue neighbours which brought her great joy. Mom and Dad later moved to Lions Estates where they formed many friendships.

Mom and Dad’s road trips took them to all parts of North America but she especially loved the road trip to the Half Moon in Lockport for a hot dog. She loved old time country music, their friends the Burghardts German music and the Irish Rovers.

Nothing brought her more joy then to be with David and Michele, Derek and Dawna and her grandchildren, Meagan, Alison (Jake) and Ashley (Kyle). She was so proud of them and all of their academic and sport achievements. Mom also enjoyed the time she spent with her stepfamilies, Kristin, Dave, Rowan, Reilly, Maygan and Robin.

Welcoming Mom at Heaven’s gate is her beloved Merrill, her mother and father, brother Benny, and her cherished grandparents.

The family wishes to acknowledge the exceptional care that she received from the Health Care team at 2 West, Riverview Health Centre.

A private interment will be held.

Donations can be made to the Riverview Health Centre Foundation or the Canadian Lung Association.

  • Ah I am so sorry to hear of Linda's passing. Since my Mom, Helen Stefura, passed away in 2015 I tried to have annual "chats" with Linda to catch up on all the people in the building. I last spoke to her maybe 6 months after Merrill's passing and she seemed to be doing so well. She always told me that happy hours in the building were NEVER the same without my Mom to liven things up ha ha. I remember when my Mom's car was sold to one of the grandchildren, the graciousness of the Groff family made her realization of no more driving just a little bit easier. You are all in my thoughts today. - Posted by: Faye Wankling (nee Stefura) (Friend of my Mom's) on: Jan 25, 2025
