GLENN JAMES AITCHISON

December 30, 1952 - January 10, 2025

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Glenn J. Aitchison on January 10, 2025.

Glenn was raised in a loving three generation home where he developed a strong sense of family pride and friendships with his playmates on Lanark Street. From his earliest years he was a Saturday Night Hockey League fan and he took great pride in assigning the original six NHL teams to each of the 6 members of the household, ensuring his team was the Montreal Canadiens and his Grandad’s was the Toronto Maple Leafs. Saturday night was loud on Lanark Street. Glenn attended various community groups in his youth including Scouts, Air Cadets, Navy Cadets and the Youth Group at Westworth United Church. As a graduate of St. Paul’s High School, Glenn went on to the University of Manitoba to achieve his post-secondary education (BA Hons Econ) and eventually acquired his CPA designation. He took great pride in his chosen profession, offering his skillset to family and through volunteer positions with Westworth United Church and Creative Retirement Manitoba. Glenn worked for various organizations throughout Manitoba and briefly worked for the Government of Nunavut residing in Rankin Inlet for a few years. He retired in 2018 from Indigenous Services Canada, Manitoba Region.

Although a quiet person, Glenn loved the adventures of travelling and especially enjoyed flying. In his younger years he would be known to travel to the Winnipeg Airport by bus to sit in the airport observation deck to track the comings and goings of the various aircraft. He had a lifelong desire to learn and acquire knowledge, which in his own words made him a master of ”somewhat useless facts”. Glenn was full of surprises with an unassuming character, and his gentle teasing of those he loved have resulted in many treasured memories.

Glenn was a great supporter of Winnipeg’s sports teams and was excited to pass this enthusiasm on to his great nieces and nephews. He was a proud Winnipeg Blue Bomber fan, being honoured with a brick on the Season Ticket Holder Walk of Fame. He enjoyed attending and supporting the Winnipeg Goldeyes and loved cheering for the Jets (though the Montreal Canadiens always came first, of course). His lifelong desire of learning saw him enroll in language classes and he became fluent in French and Spanish.

He was a gentle and kind man who was a dedicated support to those who befriended him. Once a friend, always a friend and you held a special place in Glenn’s heart. Glenn was that special family member that could be counted on to remember every birthday, anniversary and special occasion. Glenn relished his role as Uncle but was especially delighted to be a Great Uncle always ensuring to come to any family celebration, bearing gifts for his great nieces and nephews.

Glenn fell in love and married his soul mate, Donna (nee Studney) in 1985. Together they spent glorious times travelling throughout the Caribbean and Hawaii where they settled on Maui as their second home. They built a life together and supported each other for 37 years from their home on Bairdmore Blvd where they lived a life that brought them true joy through taking care of their dog, Maggie, helping family and friends, and entertaining. Donna passed in Glenn’s arms in their home on July 29, 2022 and from that moment on Glenn’s world was shattered. Glenn was loved and supported by friends and family on his grief journey, but the loss of Donna weighed heavy on his heart and soul.

Glenn faced several health concerns during his lifetime and always came through, even when these were life threatening conditions. He was a brave soul who would not stop fighting to live another day. He was known to say that at a time of God’s choosing he would be taken to join Donna where they would never be parted again. May you find peace and light in your final resting place Glenn. The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the St. Boniface Emergency Room staff who valiantly tried to save Glenn and treated him with dignity and kindness.

Glenn was predeceased by his parents, Jim and Betty Aitchison and his wife, Donna Aitchison. Glenn leaves his passing mourned by his sister, Peggy (Aitchison), nieces, Amanda Dowbenko (David), Jane Swain (Kevin), Heather Wittick, great nieces and nephews, Tessa and Dexter, and Rylee and Casey. He also is greatly missed by Donna’s cousins in Yorkton, SK, John Mandziuk and Karen (Ken) Norman. He is mourned by cousins in Brandon and Edinburgh, Scotland, as well as friends from around the world.

A celebration of Glenn’s life will be held on Saturday February 1, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at Westworth United Church, 1750 Grosvenor Ave., Winnipeg, with Rev. Tricia Gerhard officiating.

If so desired memorial donations may be made to Westworth United Church, (westworth.ca/supporting-westworth) or to Cardiac Sciences Manitoba (stbhf.ca) or to the charity of one’s choice.

Rest in Peace Our Dear Glenn

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • Glenn was a very nice man. I have known him for at least 29 years as a customer with his wife, Donna, at the Fort Richmond Safeway, and lately at Pembina Village Safeway. He always would chat with the cashiers. Several of us were known to him as "The Dream Team." I can remember seeing him walking the Fort Richmond Mall weekly, where I worked. May he Rest in Peace. - Posted by: Kerry Hilton (Friend) on: Jan 28, 2025
