ROBERT (BOB) GIBSON DARLING
On Saturday, January 18, 2025, after a long struggle with Lewy Body Dementia, Robert “Bob” Gibson Darling sadly left us.
Born in Toronto to WWG (“Bill”) and Helen Darling. Beloved husband of Alison, father of Sasha (Constance), Doug (Denise) and Scott (Jacqueline), grandfather of Brooke, Rose, Alice and Elle, step-grandfather to Eleanor and Alice, brother-in-law of Colleen, Bill and Billie Stewart, uncle of Bill, Ted, Warren, Etoile and Gabrielle, and great-uncle to many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents, brother Bill, niece Patricia and step-granddaughter Grace, their memory always cherished. He will also be missed by the Meilleur family, and several wonderful cousins, including Carolyn Koster who provided a second home whenever he came to Toronto.
Bob had a long, fulfilling career as a financial services executive, in Ontario and Manitoba, with National Trust, MK Wong and Investors Group while also mentoring many people in his civilian and military life.
Bob was a faithful reservist. Carrying on the Darling family tradition of military service as a third generation 48th Highlander, he was Deputy Commanding Officer and later, Honorary Col. He commanded the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in Hamilton, served on the advisory board of the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada and was Col. Commandant of the 78th Fraser Highlanders.
If not at work, with family or in the Mess, Bob could often be found walking 18 holes in a day at the Hamilton Golf and Country Club, St. Charles and Toronto Golf. He also had a passion for billiards and is a Past President of the Manitoba Club.
Bob had many passions, including one for travel. He loved finding other “kindred spirits” across the six continents that he visited, always the ambassador and distributing his Canada pins.
A loyal supporter of Winnipeg arts, Bob loved the WSO, the Opera and the theatre. He co-hosted an annual radio show (“The Two Bobs”) with Bob Vandewater on CJNU nostalgia radio for their yearly fundraiser.
An engaging public speaker, Bob easily connected with people. Combined with the ability to always find the humour in situations, Bob built many lasting friendships in Toronto, Hamilton and Winnipeg.
When not spending time volunteering at one of the numerous organizations he supported, Bob and family enjoyed relaxing, reading and creating some of their most cherished memories at Victoria Beach.
If you were lucky enough to enjoy Bob’s hospitality, you would enjoy many stories, your glass would always be full, and you would be “sufficiently suffonsified”. Our sincere thanks go to the staff of the Oak Unit at Fred Douglas Lodge for the wonderful care they gave to Bob.
To honour Bob’s generous spirit, donations may be made in his memory at The Winnipeg Foundation (select the “Darling Family Fund”), Alzheimer Society of Manitoba or a charity of your choice.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Manitoba Club, 194 Broadway on Friday, February 21 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Toodle-loo, Bob.

Our deepest sympathies go to Alison and family. We so enjoyed Bob’s company and his senses of humour, especially at their annual Christmas party. I have many good memories of golf and snooker events at St. Charles and the Manitoba club with mutual friends Reg Noseworthy, Bob Gannon and others. We remember him fondly. Our sincere condolences on Bob's passing. As Alison and Bob's Victoria Beach neighbours we had the privilege of experiencing Bob's hospitality, travel stories, and perspectives. He truly was a man of the world. He gave of himself and generously lent his expertise to the arts. - Posted by: Karen and Gordon Paul (Neighbour) on: Feb 08, 2025

Bob served as a fellow Trustee on the first Jointly Trusteed Pension Plan in healthcare in Canada called The St. Boniface Jointly Trusteed Pension Plan. He was invaluable in enhancing the value of the plan and summarily to The HEPP Plan as an Investment Committee Member. He was an avid golfer, a true Scot and a man I was proud to call friend. Many condolences to his family. - Posted by: Bob Romphf (Fellow Trustee and friend) on: Jan 26, 2025
