It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Joan Stewart.
Predeceased by her beloved husband, Gord, she’s survived by her loving sister, Isla, her devoted children, Mike (Cheryl) and Heather (Chuck), and grandchildren, Ethan and Hayden. Joan’s extended family and many friends will miss her forever.
Joan was born and raised in Winnipeg. She moved to Ottawa and met Gord via a chance encounter involving Gord being locked out on the balcony of his friend’s, and her neighbour’s, apartment.
Joan and Gord wed in Edmonton in 1972. They lived in Calgary, Airdrie, and then in Winnipeg for over 35 years. She and Gord travelled the world and had amazing adventures together.
For her entire career, in both Calgary and Winnipeg, Joan worked for the Federal Government in the Public Service Commission of Canada, finishing her career as an Appeal Board Chairperson. Her work took her around the country, and she loved seeing it all in her Buick station wagon.
Joan was actively part of a knitting and crochet group, lovingly known as “The Hookers”. She always looked forward to hosting an annual Christmas party for all of her friends and their significant others.
When she wasn’t actively catching and relocating squirrels from the backyard, she enjoyed making wine and fashioned herself a “winery” in the basement.
Our sincerest thanks to Middlechurch Home of Winnipeg, the staff, students of the various medical programs, and most especially to Tracy and Anna, who made Joan feel like family was always just around the corner.
The funeral will be held at Thomson “In the Park” Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd. at 10:00 a.m. on March 1, 2025.
