MEL BELLUK
Our beautiful father, grandfather and patriarch, died Tuesday, January 28, 2025, one month and four days after his 95th birthday.
He is survived by his daughter and son, loving in-laws and devoted grandchildren, and many family members. He was predeceased by his beloved Lyla, his own parents, and his 11 brothers and sisters.
Mel lived a full and adventurous life, born the third youngest of 12 on the family farm in Cloverleaf, and taught in one-room schoolhouses in Victoria Beach and Garson, until he became principal at Springfield Collegiate, Radisson Elementary and Murdoch MacKay Collegiate.
Mel was a thoughtful and compassionate educator. He schooled his staff in non-violent communication well before it was mainstream and confiscated fake coins, shotguns, and knives from angry boyfriends, without thinking to call the RCMP. Those were different times, but Mel’s kind and gentle manner defused many challenging encounters.
With his wife Lyla he returned to his rural roots in the 1970s, buying a century home and hobby-farming 25 acres with goats, gardens, chickens and horses, harvesting wheat, honey and alfalfa. For friends and family, Wenzel Street was a magical place.
In his retirement, Mel travelled. Mel travelled and travelled and travelled - with Lois (Japan) and Brent (South America) and friends and family (everywhere else). His (very few) regrets were not to have visited India and Antarctica. Otherwise - Mel was there.
Mel loved learning and he loved his friends. Retirement was good to Mel as he could travel to visit his grandchildren and stay local to have coffee with his much loved ‘Senators,’ retired teachers and research scientists.
Mel’s faith was paramount and so a Mass of Celebration will be held at 6.30 p.m. on Thursday, January 30, 2025 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 710 Roanoke Street, Transcona.
Interment will be held at a later date.
Mel’s family thanks every person who crossed his path and invites you to hug the people important to you.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favourite charity. Mel always gave to the poor.

Mel was a very nice man. He was friendly and welcoming to everybody in the room. He made everyone feel special, even in his last days. We appreciated his presence within our care. We will never forget how happy he made us feel. He made sure to let everyone know that he was a teacher and spread his wisdom towards us. I will never forget my principal! Thanks Mel for being here with us. - Posted by: Mhai (Caregiver) on: Mar 15, 2025

Mr Belluk played a pivotal role in my life which I will always be greatful for. In my grade twelve year I was told I was not going to graduate, I skipped school alot only for Mr Belluk invite me to his office. As I was ready for a lecture, Mr Belluk showed nothing but compassion and empathy for me as he knew my father just passed away. I not only graduated that year, it was Mr Belluk that handed me my diploma. In memory and respect I tell many people that story of Mr Belluk who was that one teacher that believed in me. Thanks to Mr Belluk I have worked in the educational system for over twenty years with at-risk youth and special needs students. I to am an advocate for "kids like me" thanks to Mr Belluk. I am thankful he was able to enjoy a well deserved retirement with friends and family. My deepest condolences to his family. I will never forget and be forever grateful for Mr Belluk. May he rest in peace. - Posted by: Michele Schriemer ( Partyka) (Former student) on: Feb 01, 2025
