DARYL ROSE FINNIE WALKER

(nee MCGOWAN)

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mother Daryl Rose at the age of 85 at Concordia Hospital on January 27, 2025.

Our strong, feisty, Irish mom is survived by her children, Teresa, Patrick (Lana), Sheryl (Brian), Richard and Michael (Alicia), as well as 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, her sister Della and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband James Finnie and daughter Laura as well as parents, Robert John McGowan and Loretta Mary (nee O’Donnell) and her brothers, Clifford and Robert (Bobby).

Daryl was born in Winnipeg on September 21, 1939, on her mother’s birthday. Daryl was very proud of her Irish heritage and would not admit to having a Scottish line (sorry mom). She had a sense of social justice early on in life, which helped her involvement at Mount Carmel Clinic, which included programs to help the underprivileged, including milk and bread price restrictions in the

1960s. This trait can often be recognized in her grandchildren. Often we woke up to women and their children in our living room, victims of domestic violence when there were no shelters in the city. She was a single parent with its challenges too many to mention.

Mom had polio in the pandemic of the 1950s which resulted in many health issues, but she faced her challenges with dignity and determination.

When James Finnie came into her life, she had someone to share life with and care for her. Daryl missed Jim after his passing and we can take comfort knowing they are together again.

The family would like to thank the staff at Concordia Hospital 2nd floor especially nurse Madi and the doctors for their compassion to our mother and Sheryl. And special thanks to her caregiver Stacey Horne Ross who was a good friend. We also want to thank our friends who have reached out with comforting words.

As per her request, there will be no service. Cremation will take place with interment at a later date.

Slan Agat – safe travels Mom

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • It was a pleasure to know Daryl since last June when I began volunteering at the Misercordia’s Prime program. I enjoyed our chats and her amazing stories. Your mom had great style, a dry wit and a strong spirit. Everyone liked her positive energy and I was very touched when she gave me a Christmas card. Reading her tribute I am impressed by both the resilience and kindness she showed throughout her very full life. - Posted by: Kimberley Morton (Friend) on: Feb 13, 2025

  • Dear Sheryl, Ricky, Terry, Pat , Michael, and all of the Walker and Fannie families. Mrs. Walker was such a strength to me growing up. She always had a place when I didn't have one. She was strong and loving. She won't be forgotten. In Heaven with love and peace, is where she is now. May God's great arms full of His peace and strength hold you all. - Posted by: Cyndi Croll (Friends) on: Feb 07, 2025
