JOHN (JACK) EDWARD WILLIAM RICHARDSON

July 23, 1931 - January 15, 2025

FOREVER IN OUR HEARTS

Jack passed away peacefully into the hands of our Lord with family at his side.

Jack’s early life was spent between Clandeboye, Manitoba and Dyment, Ontario. Dad was a Veteran, and we are honoured for his service to our Country. He joined the Canadian military in 1950 and was stationed in Calgary with the Lord Strathcona Horse (Royal Canadians) 2nd Armoured Regiment. He served in the Korean War from 1951 to 1953 in the roles of Sherman tank driver, gunner, mechanic, and educator. Dad shared many stories about “the ship trip” to Korea, the air flight home from Japan, and the troop train to and from Calgary. Jack was awarded the Korean Medal and United Nations Medal for his valour and was later granted the Korean Ambassador of Peace Medal. Following the war, he returned to Winnipeg as a Sergeant with the Fort Garry Horse (10th Armoured Regiment), where he remained as a lifetime member with its Association. He further served as a security commissionaire in the iron mines in Atikokan, Ontario and the nickel mines in Thompson, Manitoba.

In 1955, Dad and Mom (Isabelle, nee Andrushuk) married and had four children. They resided in St. Andrews, Manitoba near Grandpa and Grandma Richardson until 1957, and then moved between various areas of Winnipeg, northern Manitoba and northern Ontario before settling in East St Paul. Dad was a family man who enjoyed spending time and creating memories with family (Richardson, Rosaasen and Andrushuk), neighbours, colleagues, and friends.

We referred to Dad as “Jack of all trades” due to his industrious nature, for which we are grateful because he instilled in us a strong work ethic. He held many careers, including: labourer at Selkirk Rolling Mills, Dominion Store employee, supervisor and union president with Pioneer Electric, Duffys Taxi driver, Winnipeg Transit driver, Assistant to Deputy Minister of Tourism and Recreation, and Liquor Board for the provincial government led by Premier Ed Schreyer, and much more. He was a member of Royal Canadian Legion #04-009 and heavily involved in provincial politics. After retiring from Winnipeg Transit, he served as a security commissionaire and as a volunteer driver for CancerCare Manitoba.

Dad held a passion for classic cars, CBing as a HAM Radio Operator (“10-4, good buddy”), 10-pin bowling, wrestling, socials, camping, gardening, and exploring the Canadian Shield. During our family road trips we would belt out the jingle, “Hit the Road, Jack,” which planted an ear-to-ear smile on Dad’s face. He loved to laugh and had great wit. Most conversations included a joke, a grin and a wink.

Jack was predeceased by his parents, Horace and Helen; Isabelle (first spouse); Donna (sister) and Lennard Rosaasen (brother-in-law); Denis (brother) and Phyllis and Trudy (sisters-in-law); Lynn (second spouse); and Barbara (third spouse).

Dad is survived and remembered by his children and their spouses: Ken (Debbie); Karen (John); Kerris (David); and Kristen (Teresa), grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Cremation has occurred; interment will be held later in a private family ceremony at St. Clements Cemetery in St. Andrews, Manitoba, followed by a luncheon with family and friends.

A special thank you to Dad’s heroes: Ted Henderson, Dad’s trusted friend who brought joy and laughter into his life at Deer Lodge Centre; and Dad’s amazing health care teams at Riverwood Square-Harmony Court and Deer Lodge Centre (Towers 4 and 3E). We are deeply grateful.

In lieu of flowers, please kindly consider a memorial gift to Deer Lodge Centre Foundation in memory of John E. W. Richardson to support the Deer Lodge Centre courtyard refurbishment.
