HELEN STANKEY
Peacefully at age 94, Helen passed away on February 1, 2025.
Predeceased by her loving husband of 46 years, Harold, her parents, David and Margaret Webster, half-brother Robert McLeod POW Hong Kong Second World War, half-sister Davina Moore of Transcona, her beloved son Robert and his wife Carol. She is survived by her daughter Pat and son-in-law Mark Owens, grandchildren: David and Bobbi Owens, Cameron Owens and Kim Flynn, Cathie Stankey, Geordie Stankey, great-grandchildren: Megan, Justin, Connor and Lily Owens as well as Harold’s nieces, Diane, Valerie and Donna.
Helen and Harold lived in West Kildonan. Helen was a wonderful homemaker. She was a busy volunteer, leading Explorers at Kildonan United Church, working with the Ladies Auxillary of the Lord Selkirk Boy Scout Pipe Band. She was a lovely hand crafter - many a lucky baby was gifted with a hand knit shawl or sweater set. Unknown numbers of kilties were kept warm with her crocheted peter heaters.
For many years, Helen was an avid curler. She curled in ladies leagues with the Betty Bell rink out of West Kildonan and then Victoria curling clubs. She and Harold teamed up with Bob and Betty Bell to play in mixed bonspiels. They always had fun!
Harold and Helen had lots of trips with their camper trailer. They drove to BC, camping in the snow up to their knees in Banff. There were many summer trips to Manipogo Camp Ground with special friends. Their grandchildren have many memories of camping adventures.
Helen was also kept busy with Harold’s enormous garden crops! She knew more things that you could do with a zucchini! She baked, canned and pickled every fall and everyone was grateful for the shared bounty.
After Harold’s passing Helen joined the North Centennial Seniors group, going to aqua-size classes and social activities with neighbours and new and old friends. She kept active and independent riding the city buses for many years.
As Helen’s memory started to decline she stayed closer to home. Eventually WRHA Home Care came in to help and allowed her to remain on Margaret Avenue until 2022 when she moved to the Boulevard at River Ridge II. There she was safely semi-independent in her own apartment with her familiar belongings. By the summer of 2024, she required more attention, so she was moved to Poseidon Care Centre where she received such gentle and kind care, we cannot say enough about the staff on the 4th floor.
There will be a private family interment and Celebration of Life in the spring.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Fire Fighter’s Burn Fund or the Lord Selkirk RFM Pipe Band would be appreciated.

It is sad to see the passing of my Aunt. I am the grandaughter of Davina Moore. There many memories of Helen and Harold. Especially at my Wedding in the early 70’s. Your Dad was always the one who love to kibizt and tell jokes. Your Mom made a shawl for my mother Margaret Larkins (Moore) that has seen many baptisms. It is unfortunate that we lost track of where she was because there would have been a visit for sure. She was a very special person. - Posted by: Pat Bain (Neice) on: Feb 08, 2025
