DANIEL STEPHAN ROSCOE
Date of Passing: Feb 02, 2025
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDANIEL STEPHAN ROSCOE
After a sudden brief illness, Daniel passed away at home, surrounded by family, on February 2, 2025, age 65.
His 30 plus year working life in IT at U of M was book-ended by two honours degrees, a BSc and a BFA. Both were memorable adventures.
In real life, he was a much loved husband, father, and brother. He cheerfully answered to Uncle Dan, Danny, Hey You, Roscoe, or Cowboy Santa. But his favourite moniker was Dad. He was adored by dogs, accepted by cats, and a companion to many small creatures. He was an artist, storyteller, cook, teacher, and especially, a good friend. As kind a man as you could hope to meet.
The family thanks the staff of Health Sciences Centre wards WRS 3 and 2 for their care. Dan particularly appreciated the cheerful cleaners.
A memorial gathering will be scheduled in the spring.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to an animal rescue.

Today especially, we remember Dan with respect and fondness. A polymath, a Jack of all trades; a gifted artist; a responsible and exemplary employee; a good son, father and husband; an outstanding citizen; and most of all, a really decent, kind, sweetheart of a guy. You are missed with affection. - Posted by: The Donald_gillis Family (friends) on: Apr 01, 2025

Danny and I were classmates & friends during UM Comp Sci days in the late 70s/early 80s. Quite simply, what a character!! Dan, with no exaggeration, single-handedly added so much color & vitality to our U-days. Whether it was his numerous, unforgettable hijinxes in class (who could ever forget the dry ice, or chalk-hiding tricks played on Prof W, aka Hughie) or just his pure banter, Danny was the spice to our student life! I'm sure I remember those antics more than I do of operating system deadlock or the Cayley-Hamilton Theorem!! So sorry Dawn for losing Danny but thankful we have so many fond memories. Here's a toast with an honorary OC4 to you my friend! -- Dennis Bayomi, UM Comp Sci classmate, - Posted by: Dennis Bayomi (Classmate/Friend) on: Mar 30, 2025

Condolences to all of the Roscoe family on the sudden Passing of Dan. I sat across from him only very recently at a lunch. Who knew it would be the last time I would see him. He was as as charming and interesting as any other time I have spoken with him. He was full of enthusiasm. I have known Dan back to my grade 10 time at St. Paul’s. May he Rest in Peace. - Posted by: David Galbraith (Friend and longtime classmate) on: Feb 10, 2025

I knew Dan and all the Roscoes as we grew up together at Holy Family Parish. We continued to cross paths through university days and then again when our children went to school together. Dan always had such a positive outlook and attitude. He was uniquely in a league of his own and will be missed. - Posted by: Susan Rinn (Friend) on: Feb 08, 2025

Emily has always spoken so adoringly about her Dad (and Mom). You did a great job of loving dearest Emily Dan. The sign of a great man - to have the confidence to raise a daughter who is creative, inspired and informed about the world as her father. Rest easy Dan. Your job is done. Lots of love to all the Roscoe’s. - Posted by: Katherine Devine (Friend to Emily) on: Feb 08, 2025

I first met Danny or Dan (as he was then) in September 1973 at St Paul's High School in Winnipeg. We were both joining the staff of the student newspaper. I was in Grade 10, Dan starting Grade 9. We worked together on the paper for the next 3 years and became close friends along with my classmate Darrell. The three of us hung out together evenings, weekends and summers for several years thereafter till two of us left Winnipeg for good, but there's never been a period when Dan and I were out of touch. I have fond memories of Dan and Dawn's wedding at the WAG in 1981, and hosting the couple along with young Emily and Stephan in Halifax in the early 90s (Gwen had not yet arrived). Three of my favourite memories of Dan: 1) redecorating the newspaper office in the basement in the summer of 1975 as he and I took on editorship of the paper. Dan was naturally gifted in all things DIY where my talents have never lain; an emergency run to the vet with Dan's dog one May afternoon in 1975 (the dog was fine after); and tinkering in Dan's parents' house with electronics as my McGyver-like pal rigged up a recording device so I could tape all my records prior to leaving for university. Late in life, we were corresponding on photography, another area in which we had mutual interests but where once again his talents and abilities were miles ahead of mine. I learned a lot about lots of things from my dear friend, whom I will miss badly. Condolences to his siblings Cindy and John, as well of course to Dawn, Emily, Stephan and Gwen. - Posted by: Daniel Woolf (Friend) on: Feb 08, 2025
