DR. PATRICIA (BONNIE) WRIGHTON

Dr. Patricia (Bonnie) Wrighton died quietly in Winnipeg, Manitoba where she had lived for the last 21 years.

Bonnie is survived by her sister Wendy Moxon, of Winnipeg.

She is preceded in death by her father, John Wrighton and her mother, Jessie Wrighton (nee Thomson), brother-in-law Wayne Moxon as well as Fou, Little Puss, Racketycoon Chile, Grizzabella the Glamour cat, Mousie Tung, Yeshe la, Bustopher Jones and Gracie Wrighton, and Bennyanydots Wrighton.

Bonnie was born on January 7, 1941 in Winnipeg, Manitoba to John and Jessie Wrighton.

Following her father's early death, she was forced to leave school in order to work and support herself, but at the first opportunity, returned to school. This event also provided her the opportunity to be responsible for the care and upbringing of her younger sister, Wendy until Wendy married. Bonnie continued in school until she graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1978 with a Ph.D. in psychology. After moving to Napa, California in 1980, Bonnie began working at Napa State Hospital following completion of a post doctoral internship there. She remained at the hospital in the Napa Valley until 2004 when she decided to retire and return to Winnipeg and her beloved Canada.

Her interest in and dedication to the alleviation of suffering was exemplified by her involvement with the Pristine Mind Foundation in the Napa Valley, a Tibetan Buddhist foundation whose founder, Khenpo Orygen Chowang Rinpoche, is a Lama in the Nyingma School of Tibetan Buddhism.

In 2001, Bonnie was awarded a Certificate of Recognition by the California State Legislature for exemplifying peace and spirituality in her work at Napa State Hospital and by the Napa Valley Peace Table for showing continued belief, vision, and commitment to Peace through active participation in the community. She became accomplished in watercolour painting following her retirement and in 2014, one of her paintings was awarded first place by the Manitoba Society of Artists followed by the Lynne Sissons Award for Watercolour in 2016. Also, in retirement, she enjoyed being a volunteer visitor for Age & Opportunity and singing with Margaret's Choir and the Stradbrooke Show Choir.

Bonnie spent her later years at the Wellington/Venvi Retirement Residence where she made many friends. She really enjoyed her time in the "Bistro" reading her newspapers and drinking coffee. A special thank you to the Wellington staff for their care and understanding.

A Celebration of Life service will be held later date.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to either the Pristine Mind Foundation, P.O. Box 10671, San Rafael, CA 94912-1067, the International Campaign for Tibet, 1825 Jefferson PI NW, Washington, DC 20036, or Rescue Siamese, 38 Barberry Rd., Winnipeg, MB R2J 2G9.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • I heard the sad news about Bonnie's passing. She was a special person to me. She had opinions and they were strong but the soft side of Bonnie was there too. She let me see her vulnerability. Thanks Bonnie, for adding to the harmony that every voice in the choir produces. It was an honour. - Posted by: Patrick Stewart (choir buddy) on: Feb 26, 2025
