JOHN RUSSELL (JACK) MASON

August 9, 1927 - February 17, 2025

It is with deep sadness that our family announces the passing of Jack on February 17, 2025. He is survived by his loving wife Eff for 66 years, son Terry (Ottawa), daughter Wendy and granddaughter Shannon Lee Greenshields (Montreal) along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Jack was born in Winnipeg and lived in Fort Garry and later in west Winnipeg. He attended Laura Secord School and Gordon Bell School.

Jack was employed with TCA and Air Canada for 45 years originally in Winnipeg and then in Montreal in Labour Relations. He transferred back to Winnipeg Finance, retiring in 1983. Jack and Eff travelled extensively, having finally found their “Paradise” in Kona, Hawaii where they spent 21 wonderful winters enjoying the beauty of the Hawaiian island and endless golf games.

Jack was very involved in sports, starting hockey at a very early age. He was drafted as a free agent by the New York Rangers in October 1944 at the age of 17. He played hockey in many local organized clubs with the West End Orioles and Winnipeg Senior Hockey, and also baseball with Rosedale Jr. Club, Columbus Jr. Club, St. Boniface Native Sons Sr. Club, St James Legion Sr. Club and Selkirk Fishermen Senior Club. He became a very avid golfer being a member of Summerlea Golf and Country Club in Montreal, Kona Country Club in Hawaii, Assiniboine and Breezy Bend, and St. Charles Country Club in Winnipeg. After his retirement he was appointed “Commissioner” of the Saturday morning group at St. Charles, and the camaraderie of the group was very special. He was known as “Slapshot” to all his buddies. He had a great sense of humour, loved music and particularly enjoyed karaoke singing and enjoying life to its fullest.

Jack was a very loving husband, father and grandfather. He was always helpful and caring, giving of his time and assistance whenever needed. He will be deeply missed but we will remember his smile and that twinkle in his eye.

A graveside service will take place in the spring.

Sincere thanks to the entire nursing staff at Deer Lodge Centre, Lodge 4 East, for their compassionate care.

In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to a charity of choice.

  • Dear Terry, Wendy and Shannon. We were saddened to hear of Jack's passing but probably a blessing since he had quite a few months of health problems. But never the less it is always a shock to lose a member of the Family no matter what. Send our sincerest sympathies and big hugs and bessos. • Jack was a very special person. He shared his passion for life with his great smile and was always fun to be with. We have never forgotten our wonderful visit with he and Eff in Kona. Jack was a “cornerstone” of “what’s right” and always a competitor. Our deepest condolences to Eff and the family.
